Rockstars amazing western, Red Dead Redemption is coming to the PlayStation 4 on August 27th with a physical release on October 13th.

There a few important things to note however as this isn’t exactly what you’re expecting.

It is a straight port of the PS3 version meaning it is not a remaster in any way. It will not be sporting upgraded resolutions or 60fps nor will it include any multiplayer. What it does include is the DLC Red Dead Nightmare and will cost £44.99.

There is also no native PlayStation 5 version so a PS4 version is all you’re going to get.

This is difficult to recommend you pick up for several reasons. First is the price. £44.99 for a PS3 game with no upgraded visuals or frame rate seems a tad greedy. Also the GOTY edition can be bought on PS3 for around £10 if you still have a PlayStation 3 laying around.

But, and yes I know this is a PlayStation community but bear with me, if you own an Xbox Series S or Series X then please play it on one of those.

Playing Red Dead Redemption at 4K is something that needs to be experienced to be believed. It’s basically a remaster of one of the best games ever made and it can be bought for less than £10 on disc. Even on the last-gen Xbox One X you’ll still get the 4K visual upgrade just not the frame rate boost.

So if only have a PS4 or PS5 then sure buy this new version. But if you have access to an Xbox One X or Series S|X then please play it on the Xbox.

We thought that after they botched the GTA Trilogy Rockstar would have learned not to piss off its fans but clearly not.

EDIT: I stated that RDR runs at 4K60 on Series X. This is incorrect and it actually runs at 4K30.

Why does it cost $49.99 for this port? Shouldn’t it be at most like $30 dollars for a PS4 port with not even a resolution change?

For a straight port that has had no actual work done to it beyond getting it to run on PS4 I’d say more like £14.99 would be the absolute most when you can get it for less than that on Xbox and have a much better experience.
