    That’s a lot of “quotes”.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea to determine the extent of CCP’s influence on Canadian media, if it’s done from a non-partisan standpoint. They’ve been caught red-handed intimidating politicians in this country, do we figure that them trying to do the same to Chinese media is conspiracy-theory level wacko?

I just wish they would also look at the influence of other nations as well… we know there have been influence operations out of Russia, and political, but not necessarily government-backed, operations out of the US.

That said, we’d be wacko to think the CCP wasn’t attempting to influence our media. Including Lemmy.

Kinda why I specify “non-partisan”. Though I have to say I’m less concerned about Russia, we aren’t important enough to their aspirations to bother with. And we’re already pretty much onside with most of what the US wants, they can always just initiate a trade dispute that cripples us for a few years to make a point when they want to.

But the CCP seem to have a hard-on for dicking with Canada.

Do you not see this as the end result of a decades long interference campaign? Is that not concerning to you rather than something to shrug off?

Whether you like it or not, our wagon is hitched to the US. I don’t think it took a campaign of interference to accomplish that. Historically, geographically, politically and culturally we are much, much more like the US than any other country.

Edit: posting from my lemmy.ca account because lemmy.world is down the shitter again it would seem.

“The single-minded focus on China suggests that it’s not really just about foreign interference, but there’s a political agenda being played out here."

Considering how much of our media is American owned with not a peep from the same individuals pushing for this I don’t see how someone could come to any other conclusion.

Of course, the people pushing for this benefit (non-paywall link) from the kinds of foreign interference they don’t want to talk about.

Yes please, do expose the money trail of these private medias and see who’s trying to influence us from the US.

    Democracy comes with transparency.

I think we have many credible issues facing Canadians and Canadian democracy currently (housing, energy, greenbelt, cost of living, news and tech giants, climate, affordable telecommunications). Fear-mongering related to Chinese foreign influence (and their pseudo-Communism) is nothing more than a distraction from the real issues facing our country. This is an increasingly common political/corporate tactic these days
