Yeah, there’s a big difference between

          A) telling jokes that make light of a somewhat touchy or controversial subject, which people like Jimmy Carr and Anthony Jeselnik are masters of and

          B) telling jokes about how persecuted minorities are insane and should not be “indulged” in their “delusion” like Babylon Bee and every unfunny far right bigot do.

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a huge fan of A when done well and absolutely deplore B…

I’m referring to Jimmy Carr who had articles written about how him saying the Roma people being killed in the holocaust was a good thing. But also, almost every time I have seen him in a show, he’s punching down towards the Roma people specifically.

What does that have to do with your initial comment? And have you ever heard of photovoltaics? The fuck does that have to do with emotion?

I myself still drive an ICE, because I don’t want to afford an EV yet (they’re extremely expensive in Germany). An EV would be ideal for me however. I produce a shitload of energy with the PV on my roof. In the last 30 years I’ve lived here, we had exactly one power outage that was fixed within an hour. We brutally overproduce wind and solar power, EVs can actually help store that surplus energy (think vehicle to grid).

Maybe you should inform yourself before you make a fool of yourself.

Unless that was sarcasm again, because that was just such a dumb comment. Jesus.

Mate, you ever stop to think that maybe you are the one falling for right wing propaganda? No one here is saying that it’s time for full EV. That’d never work. No one is being forced either. It’s a transition. ICEs will be here for decades to come. It’d be nice to have less of them however. Plus EVs can be a puzzle piece in solving energy storage, so full renewables becomes feasible.

You’re blatantly ignoring scientific data and logic and are just parroting boulevard magazine level bullshit. Seek help, you’re definitely on the side of ignorant people who are afraid of change.

The fuck does that have to do with emotion?

I’m going to answer on their behalf:

Notice how balls-to-the-wall mad that person is while telling you to stop thinking with emotion and use logic? That accusation is a confession.

I’ve actually been seeing this a lot in the last few months from reactionary asshats, telling anyone who’s talking about problems in the world that they’re thinking with emotion and not logic, and actually going so far as to explain the concept in as much detail as their understanding can manage, as if most people haven’t already understood the concept and moved past it to a more complex view of reality where a person exists as a wholistic entity capable of integrating reason and emotion, and is not only able to see what is but the limitations of their knowledge and their imagination of what could be and what should be. Critique of Pure Reason was published in 1781 FFS.

I have to assume some right wing media grifter has recently put out some big video on the topic and they’re just parroting that, but I have no idea what the actual source of it is.

You’re absolutely right! In Germany this type of behavior is even propagated by conservative parties. They’re blaming the green party for acting on ideology. This is “emotion” paraphrased. It doesn’t come as a surprise to me that simpletons adopt this narrative. Right wing propaganda essentially works by triggering emotions.

Thank you for your genuine interest in electricity generation in my local area. The electricity mix where I’m from is a combination of wind, nuclear, and hydro electric. In emergencies we have a backup combustion system that will kick in. My power company publishes a neato dashboard all about it, it’s actually at most 1/6th and usually 1/12th or lower g/MWH CO2 VS coal fired power production.

But curiously enough, even if it were run entirely on coal, my electric car would still produce much less CO2 over its lifespan, and have the potential to get cleaner as grids improve, since gasoline is so much more CO2 intense and Ice engines are so mature without much more room for serious efficiency gains.

I’m super glad you were curious enough to ask me such open ended questions, and really happy that my work in this area gave me the knowledge to answer your obviously genuine questions. Now you can be proud to know something you didn’t know a few minutes ago becuase of your open mindedness.

I remember the last time the power went out bad, hurricane Fiona, I had a full battery while everyone else was in the long lines for gas during the hour or two a day they had the station generator running to keep the pumps working.

I was fine, thanks so much for caring, I really appreciate the thoughtful concern you’ve shown here.

Funnily enough, gas pumps require electricity. However, you can generate electricity yourself with solar panels, wind generation, or other methods. You can’t generate your own gasoline.

The self-reliant durable solution is electric. If the grid is down and you can’t generate your own electricity then your gas heating is down, gas pumps are out, and almost any other gas system is shut down unless they’re hooked up to a generator of some kind (gas, solar, etc.). If you can generate electricity then any will work. If you can’t then electric is out of commission just as much as gas. Once the tank/battery is empty then it’s dead.

There’s libertarians, and then there’s libertarians. A good portion can’t really be considered right wing, or at least not the same right wing. Being not in favor of most communist/socialist philosophy doesn’t automatically make you in favor of conservatism or fascism, and neither of those are the same either.

“Humor” is how the body comes with getting unexpected information. A crafted joke sets up an expectation, then subverts it. Every joke is essentially that. Have you ever heard a conservative “joke” where you didn’t see the punchline coming from a mile away. That’s why they only have “one joke” for every topic.
