The more I see posts that say “I don’t get it”, the older I feel. I guess I never realised how much Larson’s comics reflected and commented on the time they were written
Alright, it’s my turn: I don’t get this one
Instead of climbing the mountain “because it’s there,” he’s descending into the inverted-mountain-shaped hole “because it’s not there.”
Oh my god, rofl that’s a fun puzzle
Another one that goes completely over my head
I think it’s a reference to a quote from the mountain climber George Mallory. When asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb everest, he replied “because it’s there”.
Damn, a quote from 1923. How niche
That’s understandable as it occurred at very high altitude indeed. You could say it literally went over everyone’s head, when it happened!
Under your feet
That’s actually a pretty clever subversion. Nice.
Probably the only difficult Far Side I got on my own without an explanation
Congratulations! This one totally stumped me
I think you would need to know the quote. I heard it a long time ago and never forgot it for some reason.
I had to look this one up, it’s a reference to a mountain climber, George Mallory. From Wikipedia:
Once, when asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory purportedly replied, “Because it’s there.”
Since this is a comic from 1982: what’s the purpose of the title?
It’s the day it was posted to the fat side website
