But there is also a benefit in how AI is changing our relationship to the images around us, says Tom Ashe, chair of the digital photography program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. “Putting these tools into our phones does further democratize the ability for people to manufacture the image they want, instead of settling for what they were shown in the original exposure. This does feel like an evolution,” he says. The advantage of what AI instills, Ashe adds, is a “healthy skepticism to our idea of the photograph as a document of objective truth.”

…WHAT. How can anyone possibly spin the loss of photographic proof as a fuckin positive? Further down he says some bullshit about “we’ve been manipulating photos as long as photography has existed,” but he’s failing to distinguish between enhancing photos for aesthetic purposes and generative AI. The fuck? How can you just sweep aside the loss of objective proof?

Photos have been proof of existence for as long as they’ve existed. And we’re losing that. Actually, not only are we losing that, we’re throwing “proof” into a whole gray area that’s now just up for debate.
