879 over 141 years. That’s just over 6 new players a season. It’s surprisingly lower than I would have guessed.

The rate seems to be higher in modern times too.

Interesting to see the numbers jump at certain times. Heartbreakingly massive changes post wars

Just to save anyone time if they care. Judas is 602. 666 was actually taken by Christian Ziege nine years later.

Well established in other sports, I’ve always wondered why football hasn’t done this? Hopefully they do it like cricket and make actual caps, and idk we could like set #602 on fire or something and use the ashes for a trophy

I was like: is Campbell 602? Yep, Campbell is 602. I don’t think I could identify any other team’s most hated player…

I know the All Blacks do this. I think it’s a really cool idea. It puts you into a select fraternity of players.

Yeah players seem to really value and appreciate it as well. Arsenal include it in their presentation vids, and players always look really happy about it. Cricket and rugby have been doing it for decades and players have spoken out about how proud they felt and how it was a real acknowledgement of what they had accomplished to get there.

It’s such a simple gesture that helps to cement a player as part of history, I can’t imagine what it must mean for a player that’s come up through the academy

Interesting idea for a club with Jewish history to start giving people unique numbers.
