What a weird article, most of it is focused on a Twitter comment about the success of BG3 being “like David and Goliath”, but the author can’t even figure out what “Goliath” would be in this context.
Larian isn’t exactly a small studio, I can’t imagine thinking of them as “David” in any real context. What a weird thing to say…
They’ve pulled off a Goliath success on a David budget.
Was it a “David” budget? A cursory search isn’t turning up any definite figures, but I can’t possibly imagine the budget was a small one.
I think Goliath is the expectations that they’ve set as far as video game development goes.
So they’re defeating… themselves? I feel like there’s at least one analogy that would fit better here.
I’m impressed with Larian’s output – this time. One of the big issues with modern gaming though is companies resting on past success and using it to seed new success that may not be warranted (e.g. getting people to preorder the next game which may or may not be good).
Tldr; the most anyone should really be about any dev at this point is cautiously optimistic and let the games speak for themselves.
Their previous game, Divinity Original Sin 2, had a re-release called the Definitive Edition that was free to owners of the original launch.
They also, near the end of the game’s life, officially included a selection of community mods as optional content.
Is a great game, not as good as BG3, but absolutely worth a look to see what they’ve done before. The DE re-release also has people’s hopes up for BG3 getting the same treatment.
Yeah, CDProjekt should teach many players a lesson by now. Past success does not guarantee future works.
But I do have a slight soft spot for Swen as I backed most of Larian’s kickstarter projects.(except the card game since I don’t play card games. ) If some day he no longer have majority in terms of stock holding for Larian, then it’s the time I will be more careful about their games.

So, Divinity Original Sin 4?
^Because BG3 is DOS3^
They had a working beta/demo of a final fantasy tactics style sequel to DOS2. Played it at a PAX before they announced BG3. Even got a lanyard for it.
