Listen to me Jack, and listen carefully. This is why you can’t have free healthcare
I’m gonna cleanse you in nuclear hellfire, Jack
“Could” doing lots of work here
It is easier to intercept an intercontinental ballistic missile and the US still doesn’t have ICBM interception technology.
Good luck.
I’m not saying in actual use it’s reliable, but then again that’s true of every country’s ICBC interception capabilities. Missile guidance tech is one of the things the USA has an edge in.
It isnt reliable. That’s the point. Also, note that it isn’t for ICBMs, but short and mid range BMs.
It gained the capability to intercept ICBMs in 2020 – the USA generally upgrades extends the service life of their advanced weapons through upgrades and new versions with enhanced capabilities. It’s absolutely a last-ditch weapon in that capacity at this stage, with extremely limited utility and high probability of failure.
Making an accurate, useful hyper-sonic missile is incredibly difficult, but the USA or an advanced ally are the most likely to be the first to pull it off. We’ve seen the offerings of other powers’ “hyper-sonic missiles”: the approach of cutting the top stage off an ICBM and launching it sideways doesn’t work. They can hardly hit a large, stationary, undefended building.
What? USA has been able to do that for decades
Not reliably. If it was reliable at any point the US would have used nukes on someone else by now.
Wasn’t the point of hypersonic missiles being that they are so fast, and can make small course changes that make intercepts impossible due to the time between it happening and when an interceptor reacts?
Let’s just copy the Japanese rail system instead…
Could
They will likely come up with some no-bid sweetheart deal between numerous military-industrial complex grifters and make silly shit that can’t operate in the rain or that requires a new paint job every time it’s turned on.
Seems like a bit of a stretch if you’re having trouble developing a normal hypersonic missle. Presumably, you’d need to make something faster and more agile.
Riiiight, you’re going to build a thing that presumably goes mach 10 which can shoot other things moving at mach 10

Call it Star Wars Joe!

If it’s laser-based (and it may have to be if it’s going to intercept anything going that fast) it is the Star Wars thing all over again!
Pissing off the rest of Asia in 3… 2… 1…
Japanese demilitarization post-WW2 kept relations stable and happy. What will this do?
I’d prefer if they’d build big ass robots.
Maybe splitting the cost over two countries is worth it? Japan would benefit from decreasing the risk of hypersonics to US air craft carriers
