          This is an ancient slavic word.

          Before the XIX century they were called “Piróg” (“piroog”). This word’s ethymology indicates proto-slavic origins - “pir” in old slavic meant a feast/celebration and “róg” still means “horn” in polish. So basically a “festive horn”.
