Why even make these lists? Game taste is very subjective. I would not rank them in this order but then i haven’t played all of them either.
Two reasons:
- generate engagement - a lot of people will disagree, which means a lot of people will click
- it lists (almost) all of the games, with a short description of why to play; that has value for me, since I like to play most of a given series I like
I personally don’t care about the order they give, I care more about the consolidated list of games. I especially like the “top XX games in {genre}” lists, because it helps me find fun games to play in a genre I like. Again, I don’t care about order, I’m just looking for a somewhat related list of well-known games.
I missed the word “Final” in the headline and was expecting a much longer list.

- IV: The After Years
It’s only numbered single player games and numbered sequels. So no Tactics. Some of this seems intended to drum up controversy. But that’s their list.
Edit: It’s also missing Crisis Core. So I guess it doesn’t include direct prequels either.
13 being anywhere but at the bottom of the list is meant to start a fight.
Lightning Returns is above 4! And it’s above the other games in the 13 series! 10 2 is above 10 for some reason! This list is absurd just for those!
(not that anyone asked, but

2Didn’t play 8 9 or 13, or enough of 15 or 16 to have an opinion. 14 isn’t on the original list but it’s at the top)
No XIV either.
They specified single player in the title. So neither XI or XIV would be included. I just thought it was odd that they didn’t include any of the other single player games either.
Who the fuck puts 10 above 9? and 12? Bah, shit ranking.
Those are some of the least controversial parts of this list. IX is great. But I would put X over IX in both personal ranking and as a fan ranking.
I would put XII over IX personally and just below in a fan ranking.
IX was the end of an era, X was the start of linear gameplay pretty graphics focused FF that still exists today.
So, you’re welcome to your opinion. But it’s definitely the minority. Long story short, there’s plenty of reason to prefer X.
As a game in and of itself, the gameplay is far superior. IX is slow as hell and makes me want to not want to replay the game.
The majority of the previous games are linear, especially when you’re just following the story. X had just as many branches to explore. They just didn’t have the overworld.
If we’re talking impact on the franchise.
XII and XV are two of the most open world games we’ve had and they came after X. XVI also has plenty to explore. And this is ignoring the two MMOs. It seems like your problem is with XIII.
Also they’ve always been the best looking games in the market.
My (obviously factual) list:
- XVI (Cancelled immediately)
- XII (Double cancelled)
- IX (Redemption)
- XV (Nvm ultra-cancelled)
- VI
- X
- V
- VII (Crucifixion)
- IV
- III
- II
- I
- VIII (Goated OST)
Never played XIII. I do have a Japanese PS3 copy, and I intend to play that when I have some knowledge of the language. Good practice.
