But people don’t seem to think of it as artsy and counter culture any more. Instead they focus on the rich dudes from Silicon Valley (who were also there in the early 2000s).
my first burn was in '99 and the big talk that year was the airport which had just become a permanent structure. The old burners at that time had a few years of the temporary airport running at that time and the general vibe I caught was that the airport was the end of the festival because it started separating the folks who had worked to get there from the ‘tourists’. I can recall this vividly because i remember feeling pleased that I had ‘suffered’ the long way in vs just air dropping in.
A few years later, thanks to a ticket SNAFU, I had to sneak into the city with a companion which is actually not very simple to do and it remains to this day one of my finest memories of Burning Man!
Unauthorized entry is one of the finest tenets of penetration testing, hacking , social engineering and espionage.

I watched too much defcon one time and there was a job fair that required you have linked in or a portfolio that I couldn’t set up on time. Fuck it, I snuck in with no pass, saw my bud enter legitimately, walked up to him and shook his hand and blended in.
Funny to see how burning man has changed over the decades. When I first heard about it, it was very anarchist hacker related.
