I’m very much looking forward to the musical episode. When Buffy did a musical it was a nice change of pace and a lot of fun. I’m hoping for much the same from SNW’s musical.

At the risk of sounding hypocritical since I posted the question about why Vic Fontaine sang so much in DS9, I do think that Subspace Rhapsody could do well, and I look forward to it. Unlike the Vic Fontaine songs that are one offs short pieces in a non-musical story, Subspace Rhapsody is intentionally a musical and it seems it comes along with some choreographed dancing.

I do like musicals, and I do like Sci-Fi but I get the combination of both is gonna be really tough and not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love that SNW is bold and secure enough to give this a try. From all Sci-Fi shows out there, SNW is probably the best series to give this a shot.

Note that Celia Rose Gooding was a Tony Award-nominated, Grammy Award-winning Broadway singer before they joined Star Trek. The other cast members, not so much singing experience, but we shall see. Whatever happens this Thursday, can’t say it won’t be interesting to see.

Yeah. I really don’t get why people are so opposed to the idea of a musical tbh

Because Star Trek is very serious business. Every episode is a deep philosophical treatise on the nature of humanity and our place in the galaxy. You know, like “A Piece of the Action”, or “Take Me Out to the Holosuite”, or “Bride of Chaotica”.

How is a musical episode supposed to measure up to that lineage?

Quite so actually. Trek has always had music as an element, whether than be Spock’s lute, the Enterprise-D crews stuffy classical obsession, the DS9 crews lounge music, Seven and the Doctors singing lessons in Voy, Mariner and Tendis shared love for Klingon hardcore punk, etc. A full episode seems like it was inevitable.

A few years ago Dan Abnett managed to pull of a musical issue of his gritty space western comic Lawless set in the Judge Dredd universe, complete with a recorded cast track to listen to while reading. If that worked, Trek can totally do it.

Musicals aren’t my favourite thing, but sometimes they’re awesome. If any Trek can pull off musical it’s SNW.

I hope it gives everyone something to do. Most of the time Star Trek is best when it’s an ensemble show. This is one of the reasons episodes like Cause and Effect are my favourites: everyone works to solve a problem. That’s the future, or at least the work environment I want.

It’s not my cup of tea, but when I wanted an episodic story of the week show, I understood that variety would include content for other fans as well and I won’t always have an episode that is just to my taste.

It’s seems like a logical episode after having watched The Naked Now/Time and I know it’s a matter of taste which I’m happy for those who will enjoy it.

The cast seem very adept at skipping between the more serious stuff and the more goofy stuff. They all seem to have the range, so I imagine there’s not going to be “Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia / Russell Crowe in Les Misérables”-type situation.

I am totally convinced that the cast can do a musical episode. The script is going to be the difficult part, but if it’s fun enough then I don’t care.

I’m so looking forward to this! You can tell from the trailer that the cast had so much fun!
