This blog compare them all regarding privacy: https://digdeeper.neocities.org/articles/email
Using your own domain name is the most important as it allows you to change provider if they ever make a change you do not like or go bankrupt. In this regard, I think that the best is posteo or a smaller provider you know near your place (https://www.chatons.org/en).
Tuta (previously Tutanota) because it’s private, runs on 100% renewable energy, very affordable if you want to use a custom domain, has end-to-end encryption between Tuta emails and it’s email clients are open source including a very nice app on F-Droid
Proton I guess? First tier is free, it’s encrypted, your data is protected by Swiss privacy laws… There’s an app for your phone and also a single VPN account as well.
They don’t have a linux client for their Drive storage solution so I am mad at them but it may fit the ticket for you.
My only problem with Proton is that they don’t work with native mail clients (especially mobile). I’d go with FastMail personally, but I do see the appeal of Proton.
Yeah, but it’s important to point out that the reason for that is that your data is encrypted at rest and they cannot decrypt it for you and your vanilla imap client.
They do have a decryption app for desktop that allows you to use your desktop email client.
I’m very happy with posteo
Still riding my free google workspace account for personal domains.
If I had to move I would look into a paid Microsoft account.
I also looked at zoho because of how cheep it was, and Synology for self-hosted. I ruled out the Synology because self hosting sucks and zoho because anti-spam is hard.
Proton?

I really like purelymail. I’ve had no problems, their billing is super simple and really cheap. The security options are nice and it doesn’t want to sell me a VPN or share my files or any crap like that.
AOL.
If only for their resilience.
I’m with mxroute.
Cheap but serviceable.
Your local email coop … we have a small one where i live. We own the infrastructure. Seize the means of computation right …
Email? Is that like the gopher client you use to telnet to FTP sites?
My own, because I have full control.
I see someone is a masochist
Honestly, it’s not as hard as people make it out to be. Apart from regular updates I only have to touch the configuration every few years to keep up with the newest useless anti-spam measures.
Microsoft. Also I still end up in spam. Too lazy to do warmup
I find the yunohost mailserver pretty good ootb
Running the server itself is fine (I have done and still do run a mail server), but getting the large email providers to not flag your message as spam can be quite tricky.
Use a third party SMTP relay. There are plenty of free ones and it just works, no hassle.
Yeah I mean, if I don’t run a mail server then it’s pretty easy to run a mail server 🤣
Startmail is fine, with it’s infinite alias
FastMail is worth considering.
Love Fastmail, been a customer for years. Lightning fast web interface, decent app, rock solid and, for Darwin’s sake, a paid product so they leave your email alone instead of mine it endlessly.
