No mention of Firewatch so I’ll be the first to say it, it caught me off gaurd how good it was.
It’s especially impressive when the indie game developer themselves make the bangers.
Toby Fox cooking a fire soundtrack and then making a game to have something to put it into
Sans boss fight theme is just chiefs kiss perfect👌
Yeah indie game studios be making better games then multi billion dollar triple a companys
ConcernedApe comes to mind. I think he has actually said that a big reason why he made his game is so people would listen to his music.
I assume Mike Klubnika did the music for his games including Buckshot Roulette.
Kristofer maddigan composing an entire fucking big band soundtrack for cuphead and recording it live:
Instead of burning the music to the CD, he burned the CD
They did this stunt at the Olympics opening ceremony.
People have played actually burning pianos (usually old, crap ones) but getting good tunes out of the instrument is not compatible with heating the strings that much, they detune and snap. I think they just used a keyboard built into an otherwise empty piano case with some gasoline.Lena Raine, is that you?
Exactly what I thought when I saw this. The Celeste soundtrack is so good - I’m not good at platform games but the music kept me going. The story was great too, but I’m not sure I would’ve stuck with the game if the first steps (see what I did there?) didn’t have me humming along.
The story deeply resonates with me :3
And I’m also not good at precision jump and runs, it took me several hours climbing the summit, I had to assist in the core and failed utterly on farewell :(
I didn’t finish Farewell too - in my head, I consider that optional as it was added later and has a significant difficulty bump - the devs knew that too as they gated it.
I finished it, and my goodness, the music was perfect ! Any other composer would have made me mute the song as I failed the screen 100 times for hours, but somehow Lena’s music doesn’t get annoying after looping.
doseone is the most underrated producer for indie games. His “actual” music is fucking insane, as well.
Did you, reader, play
Enter the Gungeon
Gang Beasts
Escape Academy
Disc Room
Sludge Life
Orbitalis
Super Game Jam
Heavy Bullets
The Samurai Gunn
If so, DOSEONE SOUNDTRACK!
Check out his album with the late, great Alias - Less is Orchestra. It’s absolutely incredible.
How has nobody mentioned Chris Christodoulou (Risk of Rain), Studio Pixel (Cave Story), Ben Prunty (FTL, Into the Breach), Christopher Larkin (Hollow Knight), or Andrew Prahlow (Outer Wilds) yet‽
I’m also quite partial to Craig Barnes (Streets of Rogue) and A Shell in the Pit (Full Metal Furies & Chicory).
Christopher Larkin moment

For all you Life is Strange fans out there.
One of my all time favorite OSTs for indie games would be Crosscode’s OST.
All the songs that Laura Shigihara has worked on are great too.
First answer to me is Chris Christodoulou, who did everything for Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2. The man knows how to let ambient vibes build to boss music
This is basically how Ixion went. The game didn’t need a soundtrack to go this hard, but it absolutely put it over the top.
Here’s one I haven’t seen mentioned, nuclear throne has an amazing soundtrack. Shit I gotta go play it again now lmao
