Summary

ICE agents arrested Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a leader in Columbia University’s encampment movement, claiming his student visa was revoked.

However, his attorney Amy Greer states he has a green card, not a student visa.

Despite filing a habeas corpus petition, Greer can’t locate where Khalil is being held, noting his eight-months-pregnant wife couldn’t find him at a New Jersey facility.

The arrest follows Trump’s March 4 social media threat to defund universities allowing “illegal protests” and deport “agitators.”

This is not normal. He did not commit a crime. Everyone in these borders has first amendment rights specifically to prevent the government from just declaring some people non citizens and oppressing them.

Don’t you understand?! 1st amendment only applies to things that align with the Trump party agenda.

That’s what makes America the most free country of all.

This article doesn’t even mention his name. He was a leader on Columbia’s campus for pro-Palestine protests but all accounts show that he didn’t partake in or encourage any vandalism or barricading of buildings. Even your explicitly biased news source does not list enough evidence to convict this man of any crime worthy of revoking citizenship or trampling his free speech.

If you’re serious about combating anti-semitism, you need to recognize the difference between Anti-zionism and anti-semitism. Genuine anti-semitism is more rare on Lemmy than other platforms, I call it out whenever I see it. None of us should tolerate any kind of Bigotry. Zionism is about Settler Colonialism and Ethnic Cleansing of native Palestinians, it is not reflective of Judaism nor is it representative of Jewish people. Anti-zionism is not anti-semitism. The conflation of the two is genuinely antisemitic, as it falsely attributes the actions of Israel to all Jewish people.

Zionism is anti-Semitic at it’s core, it other-izes Jewish people, and justifies the violent settler colonialim of Israel as in the defense of all Jewish people, which only serves to further fuel genuine Antisemitism at the expense of Jewish people globally. Zionism is also an inherently fascist ideology. The ethnic cleansing of the native people of Palestine has always been fundamental since it’s inception as a colonialist movement.

Adi Callai, an Israeli, does a great analysis of how Antisemitism has been weaponized by Zionism during its history.

              1. Article is fairly old, though it is stated that Mahmoud is a leader of a sorts in the Columbia campus movement so we can guess he didn’t show up yesterday.
              2. These protests started peacefully ages ago and the current administration is outright banning them. What are they gunna do, just sit down and take it?
              3. Palestine is being aggressively ethnically cleansed right now and the US government is enabling it with a smile on its face. Context is important because fighting back against people who consider you vermin is not a fucking hate crime. Zionists can fuck right off.

I have not confirmed, but a post on BlueSky suggested this was just a postured threat and not taking place. I suggested to one of the threatened families that he should immediately file a Tort lawsuit against the administration anyway, just to make clear even threats won’t be accepted.

Secretary of State Marc Rubio also shared an article about Khalil on Sunday night and posted on X, “We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.”

Everyone regardless of immigration status has free speech rights in the US. Rubio is bragging about pissing and shitting on the Constitution. They cannot use immigration to suppress free speech, obviously. This guy needs to released by the courts immediately or American free speech is a complete farce.

Harris of the Biden Harris administration that was arresting student protestors from the start?

Or Harris of the Biden Harris administration that deported more people than trump while dropping the number of new visas issued?

I learned about this only recently, and was very disappointed on this.

It’s made me examine my own biases that I’ve only “grumbled” about Biden’s relatively quiet acceptance of Israeli genocide, and now understanding he deported protestors. I’d desperately want to understand what drives the tacit support there. That said: The “Genocide Joe” tagline didn’t ever convince me.

EDIT: Wow, and now I’m being thrown back in a loop and wondering if the links I just came across earlier today were correct, or if I was reading info out of context. Sounds as though, yes, ICE kept deporting in often suspect circumstances under Biden, but those were unrelated to protests? I’ll…leave this comment up as a public lesson in how easy it is to be misinformed while I keep reading to understand as best I can.

On Dec. 17, 2019, my husband, Rodner, and I went to our local Immigration and Customs Enforcement office with our attorney for a routine check-in, a requirement of his pending green card. About an hour later, my lawyer emerged and told me Rodner was being deported.

Dude was deported when Trump was in office. But sure, blame Biden for it to show how committed you are to being uncommitted.

Answering a question with a question is pretty shitty.

They made a statement. You responded with leading questions that implied the statement is factually incorrect. The premise of your questions was also incorrect - the previous administration opposed the protests, but they did not send federal agents after protesters for arrests or deportations. Unlike the current administration.

Rather than answer (mis)leading questions, OP responded with questions to force you to explicitly answer whether their original statement is incorrect. Did Harris do this? Would Harris have done this? They’re fair questions. But I guess only you get to ask questions around here.

Strictly speaking, everyone in the United States has the freedom of speech regardless of their being citizens or not.

With that being said, green cards and the like can be rescinded for a variety of reasons, particularly national security.

Add in the fact the Supreme Court has yet to firmly deny the right of Trump to do anything and the outright antisemitism at these protests, the picture of the future ain’t good for this guy.

I would get your family out of America. People downplaying this are willfully ignorant. Maga pretending it’s all hysterics are wrong, tankies pretending this is business as usual because “America bad” are wrong.

All the groundwork is laid to mass imprison and deport dissidents, the definition of dissident is widening, we are witnessing a complete lack of checks and if your last hope is violence from the populace or the military to fix this then I think Americans need to trust their gut and recognize this place isn’t worth staying

It really depends on where. Southern states and cities are seeing more “enforcement”. Some northern and more liberal states are fighting things. Outside of the cities I have not seen any ICE but I’m also not one of the targeted groups.

The internet really is not a good representation of the US when it comes to day to day life for ‘normal’ people.

Other than office gossip, the effects of our shitty leadership hasn’t effected the lives of everyone. Its more of a storm off in the distance that casts a big shadow as it randomly electrocutes people here and there. But still far away that you can’t see it happen, but you can hear it happen.

It’s unacceptably bad but at the same time not an issue. I realize that sounds crazy but unless you join a protest or live in or frequent a targeted community then you would think nothing changed.

This is why we don’t have mass protests yet because it’s not actually breaking out of the media sphere for most of America.
