The data covers the work of organisations HazteOir and CitizenGO, comprising documents which date from 2001 to 2017 like spreadsheets of donors and members, strategy and planning documents, letters, financial charts and legal and training documents. HazteOir was first founded in 2001 in Spain to campaign for right wing values, in 2013 it founded CitizenGO to spread its work beyond Spanish speaking countries.

Isn’t WikiLeaks a compromised Russian op now? Of all of the right-wing organizations out there, they target these two?

@acastcandream except for the fact that’s an absolute lie. he said - repeatedly - that they didn’t receive anything about him that hadn’t already been published and widely disseminated. that isn’t the kind of lazy ‘journalism’ they do, repeating old news that wasn’t that important to begin with. they have standards/criteria for what they publish. they do real journalism.
he also said, repeatedly, that choosing either of them was like trying to choose between gonorrhea and cholera. he’s also NOT AMERICAN. so, not about his personal politics.
he’s also spoken several times about having to be the public spokesperson for wikileaks. it was not about fame, but, he was internationally famous, and beloved and admired, well before 2016. so again, not about fame.
and of course he selected and chose what and when to publish. he was the publisher. duh. that was his job, to make those decisions.

You can have an interest in another country’s politics even if you aren’t from the country.
For me it’s simple: I don’t believe the words of a liar who picks and chooses what to release based on his own whims and personal interests. If you run a site allegedly committed to transparency, then you don’t bury information that you simply don’t like.
I’m not confident it is a Russian op, but Russia has always fueled both sides of the political spectrum. They don’t necessarily want one side to prevail, they just want their opponents to be divided.
In the last 7 years they’ve been pretty one sided on the political propaganda spectrum
They’re definitely in favor of the right, but it was only a few years ago that a Russian-backed bot fa was found to be running both right-wing and left-wing propaganda accounts. They know that if we’re busy fighting amongst ourselves, we won’t pay as much attention to everything that they’re doing.
That’s one thing that’s always been flawed about the russia discussion. Russia is often astroturfing discussions online or spreading misinformation and just letting the chaos unfold. There isn’t a ton of deliberate or direct coordination with American personalities/pundits/etc. People like Hannity/Carlson/etc. just don’t care if it does line up with Kremlin talking points. They read the wind, look at the numbers, and go “if I say this, ratings do x, politician gets y support, and i keep making big dollars owning the libs.” In government it gets a little murkier of course. But I don’t think trump sat down with Putin personally and said “win me an election.” I think his team knew Russia was fucking around with things and they subsequently took advantage of the chaos. It’s still terrible, but it is distinct.
Good ol’ “Foundations of Geopolitics.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_Geopolitics
It’s succeeding beyond Dugin’s wildest dreams.
Maybe they don’t target anybody and just publish what gets into their hands and they see as worthy of publication. They are not the leakers they are the publishers.
They are also the editors. These documents have been redacted to comply with privacy laws. As publishers, they also decide the date of publication… which in this case is quite “curious” (see my other comment).
