Im in search of a discord alternative to host for my circle of friends and im curious as to what you all recommend, and why? Bonus points for ease-of-use and ease-of-setup
Matrix/Element has been the best for our group. You could also give rocket chat or Mattermost a spin.
IRC is what works for me, but others don’t seem to be, mainly due to inline image previews and easy attachments…
There is the Matrix protocol, which you can use the Element app.
Also, if you want a more Discord-like alternative, there is Revolt

They will at some point. Just like reddit, they kept raising money and growing indefinitely to corner the market. Sooner or later they will have to find some way to pay back their investors and this is when they will shit the bed.
With plenty of open source, privacy-respecting alternatives out there that can benefit from our support, why not just drop Discord now and avoid the shitshow before it happens?
I love Discord but they harvest tons of personal data. It’s very intrusive
