I think phones have generally taken over MP3 players because you can do everything an MP3 player does on your phone.
But I recently bought one because I just like a single device having that unique purpose of playing music.

I want to get one that can play flac and Spotify. I try to use my phone for music but I just get distracted.
I’ve been liking my Astell&Kern SR25 player. Although it is wifi only so I have to make a hotspot for Spotify to work on the road. Flacs sound pretty good on it, far better than any phone. The. UI is very minimal and built around the local music player with other apps hidden away.
That sounds perfect actually. I’ll look into it. I’d use it 99% at home so no cellular is fine. Not like I’m using my open backs at the airport anyway. Thank you for the recommendation!
If you want something more Android-y the Sony NW-A306 exists.
