ML has already had a huge impact on the world (for better or worse), to the extent that Yann LeCun proposes that the tech giants would crumble if it disappeared overnight. For several years it’s been the core of speech-to-text, language translation, optical character recognition, web search, content recommendation, social media hate speech detection, to name a few.

Some of the current thought on shortcomings of LLM capabilities actually takes influence from human cognitive science, and what can be learned from those with neurological impairments. It’s thought that human language abilities are strongly dissociated from other reasoning abilities because individuals with aphasia can lack the ability to speak or comprehend language, yet be able to solve mathematical problems, engage in logical reasoning, enjoy music, categorize objects and events, etc.

It’s shown that LLMs develop a crude world model for performing reasoning tasks, yet it’s inextricably tied up with their language functionalities (since they are ONLY language based). The hope for future research is to develop AIs with world models and planning faculties that are decoupled from the language analysis module, which would mitigate hallucination and aid in interpretability.

LOL I remember when there was no better alternative to buying shitloads of CDs. In some ways I miss the relationship I had with music back then. In that scenario though, your best bet would be to buy more than one CD, rip them to a computer with a USB optical drive, and make yourself playlists that are 8 hours long. I certainly would never advocate downloading music with filesharing software like soulseek.

I joined Twitter fairly recently as Machine Learning Twitter is/was a thing, and I wanted to stay abreast of news from people like Andrej Karpathy, Chris Olah, Andrew Ng etc., especially since r/MachineLearning went down the shitter.

But I can’t even - I log on and just instantly see ragebait posts from Daily Mail talking heads and bullshit.

Ah OK I was mistaken and under the impression that it was originally created under Ford ownership, but it actually stems from the British Leyland era.

However the XJR-15 and XJ220 were under Ford, and look sensational. (Although most of the development was probably done while Jag was still independent).

I can’t help feeling a lot of these new motorized doodads are total deathtraps. I used to have a 40mph kaabo electric scooter and although it was mega fun, I sold it before it had a chance to kill me. Small wheels, poor geometry for stability, small caster angle, intoxicatingly high power - it’s a recipe for disaster.

You don’t like the XJS?

I have a Quest 2 VR headset that I use for playing sim racing like Assetto Corsa, and flight sim on Xplane 11. To use that I have to open up Meta’s Quest app, connect the headset to the computer over the WIFI, and it sorta functions like a monitor. In that I can view the whole Windows desktop environment on a virtual screen floating in VR space. When you open a VR game like Xplane you stop seeing the floating monitor, and it takes over the whole VR eye space for the duration you play it.

Is this type of thing also possible on Ubuntu? If so, I’ll shitcan Windows ASAP.

As an Ubuntu + Win10 dual booter I had a couple of instances where Windows update destroyed things so irreparably that live Ubuntu boot-repair failed to work, and hours of back-and-forthing error messages to Ubuntu IRC and discord support channels yielded nothing. And I’m too stupid to know any other way of fixing it, so I was SOL. Your milage may vary.

I once naively used Windows file copy utility to transfer my huge MP3 library to an external hard drive and later lost the originals. I came to find out it silently failed to copy any songs containing certain nonalphanumeric characters. To this day I’m still traumatized when I try to locate some song and find it’s not there. Burn in hell Windows.

I actually really like all those designs. They’re bold, playful, distinctive. Much more interesting than the dreary crossovers of today that all look identical - bloated hatchbacks with unnecessarily high ride-height, angry anime eyes, and oversized grilles. Full-width tail light bar like a dollar-store Porsche completes the look.

I like Gnome because it looks sexy and sleek, and comes default on my Ubuntu. I have a little experience with XFCE and LXDE on Proxmox and Raspberry Pis, and they’re perfectly functional and great, so I don’t want to besmirch them. But they give me a kinda uneasy sensation like I’m using a tamagotchi or something. I don’t know if this is only because I’m using them on low-power potato computers or without proper display drivers, but they just look a little crude by comparison.
