You are right, it doesn’t happen with any other O/S except iOS where you have to pay people/Apple to fix it (or reset the OS) or Windows where the stock response is “reinstall the O/S”

How valuable is the data on your laptop? Did you have it backed up? If so, stop worrying and just take the Windows approach. If not… Find someone local to you who is able to fix it (good luck with that…)

As for the rest - you come over as someone who expects someone else to fix your shit for free with no information other than “waaaa it’s stopped working”

Fwiw, based on your brief description of symptoms, I would say your boot device file system is broken somehow. To fix you need to mount it on another booted OS and fsck it (however if it mounts, copy valuable data off onto other media, then fsck it) . How to do that is left to your powers of Google. Not warranting my response in any way.

First up - I know nothing about your specific problem. Let me add some pointers as to why you may be having difficulty…

You need to provide way more detail than a screenshot (which shows nothing really) and “why is it broken?”

What is the hardware, what is the boot device, what is the boot loader (and version), what does the boot loader config look like… There could be any number of things that stop the boot, including a corrupt boot file.

No one is able to diagnose your problem from the information you have provided.

If you are unwilling to grab a USB stick from a retailer, boot a different OS image and try some diags on your original file system you may well find people reluctant to help (for free…)

Hmmm… Quite happy to sit corrected here. If they are using TBMs then other than where the west of the tunnel is going to be I don’t see a problem.

Was definitely going to be c&c originally but that may have been many years ago (the whole tunnel the A303 past Stonehenge thing has been going for 30 years or more).

I haven’t kept up with the project since moving away a few years ago.

EDIT: Cut & Cover is no longer on the table. I am pretty certain it was back along.

I think (as an ex local) that a tunnel isn’t a bad idea per se. However the intention is to use cut and cover to construct it, which will be massively destructive - both to landscape and archaeology.

Perhaps a case could be made for reuse of the HS2 TBMs currently entombed near Euston station?

The A303 has always been a terrible road and there has never been anyone willing to commit to more than sticking plaster solutions at pinch points.

It’s a hay rake design by some guy called Barnsley… Arts & Crafts movement. Plain oak top, 7’x3’ ish, dovetail fit to oak hay rake frame which is wooden pinned together. The top has been abused over the years but being oak it just absorbs the abuse and turns it into character!

There is one in the same style in Cheltenham museum (UK) but mine is nicer. My cousin has its twin.

Not sure it counts but I have an oak dining table my grandfather bought back in 1910 or there abouts… So 113 years-ish. Still used every day.

Part of this magic relates to the hardware.

Change the hardware and you won’t be able to decrypt the messages.

So try to move a message database to a new machine (either because you want to or because someone else has snaffled it) and you won’t be able to decrypt the database.

Laptop - Manjaro because it works and I quite like KDE/plasma.

Work - I use ubuntu server (choice) and Turnkey Linux (legacy) for streaming internally/intranet things respectively. Most of the servers are windoze (corporate policy)

PC at home - Mint (though not so much these days because of an old nvidia card for which there is no longer support and it’s not as convenient as the laptop)
