  • I don’t mean to give you unrequested advice so apologies if I come across as dismissive of your experience. I just feel like I can add some points that people in your situation might benefit from.

And that is to not chase love in itself. I found that as I got older I also accepted that I would grow old without a romantic relationship. Though I did invest time in my friendship relationships, and that did work.

While being somewhat saddened by it, I accepted that the chances of me finding love through dating apps was low, in particular because I don’t want to have kids, which obviously is a deal-breaker for many people. So my approach there was to just try to enjoy the moment without expectations and without judgement. If I got a match I’d try to have a fun conversation, if it was fun I’d try to set up a date, and if that was fun I’d keep it going. Just going for having an enjoyable time at that moment without expectations. It made even the dates that weren’t going anywhere long term enjoyable experiences, with the occasional opportunity for physical intimacy with someone who was on the same page about expectations. I could have lived like that but just got plain lucky this year I think. For me it still feels amazing to have happened so I’m not going to type lies and say it will happen for everyone. But I went into this relationship with no expectations either so regardless of what happens in the future I will treasure what is happening now, as I’m a relationship with the most amazing woman who adores aspects of me that would often be things other dates told me made me seem immature and obsessive.

So, you and people that relate to you, I genuinely wish you happiness and good things. In all aspects of life. But please don’t give up on meeting new people if you can, you might make someone else happy just by existing. Or if not you could at least give them a nice date.

  • Command line stuff on Windows (server) is in a pretty decent state now, imo. It’s not perfect but more and more is manageable with powershell. It took some time to really grok that you’re basically always working with objects but I’m a big fan and now quite dislike having to deal with just “text” output when I do something in Linux. (Probably also because I need to do a lot less in it so I’m not used to it as much)

Personally again I also like the naming scheme much more than how it’s done in bash. If I need to do something I don’t know I can search the command by using logical words. E.g. I want to change the properties of a service but don’t know the command by heart I can use

    Get-Command service

And I’ll get a list of all commands that contain the word service.

When it comes to admin privileges you simply have the privileges of the account you used to start the session, which has its’ own dangers I suppose since it requires you to maintain account hygiene yourself.

  • While I don’t think this in particular would cause people or businesses to switch away from Windows, more and more applications work from browsers so they depend less and less on apps you can install. ( Where I work we already put many people on M365 basic because they do just fine with accessing their mail and spreadsheets from the browser. No point in paying extra for options they’ll never need)

  • I am a blonde blue eyed man who loves martial arts. Many, many people I train with are pretty open in their racism around me as long as there’s only white people around. In larger groups they make no secret of their conspiracy beliefs. And they’re constantly going to defense camps, survival camps, masculinity camps.

They follow and idolize both the US fascists like Trump, Desantis, JP. And their local versions who organise these kinds of camps (look up Dries Van langenhove).

It’s not the blood and honour kind of Nazism, so perhaps not accurate for this article, but they genuinely believe he was right.

  • Most reactions here are focusing too hard on the title. These clubs aren’t like, nor inspired by ‘Fight Club’. These groups pose as groups for men wanting to connect with other men so they can learn about physical and mental health, philosophy and self defense. The sports they train are absolutely effective and the hope they get brain damage from this is naive. They practice the same principle that most sane martial arts gyms use since many of them are involved in those as well.

  • I wish I could say the same but if you want to date you have to here. I despise and absolutely hate how you have to you use a phone number to register. And then every contact you have can add you to a group so everyone there now can have your number.

I’ve had a stalker before and I hate that stuff like that makes it trivially easy for her to get my number again. I literally can’t understand how women are okay with absolutely shitty systems like this. I really can’t repeat enough how much I strongly hate WhatsApp and how everyone else thinks it’s so good for exactly the reason that I hate it. It’s too easy to send messages despite me never giving you my number to begin with. SMS is the same but you can’t add me to a group without my permission and share my number with a group of people I don’t know.

Yes, MM DD YY only makes sense when you’re speaking

For many people it doesn’t. It’s something that’s exclusive to the US. In British English it’s day before month when speaking.

It’s something that is taught in school as “remember that the Americans say date before month so you don’t get confused”. But in a business context it’s bloody annoying you don’t switch to the international standard.

  • I paid for sync for Reddit, I donated to my Lemmy instance and I’ll pay for Sync for Lemmy once I decide for myself whether I take the subscription, simply ad free or one time payment for ultra. As there’s still fixes to the pricing going on I’ll wait out for that

I guess I’m biased with paying for software since I work at a company that makes software it also offers in its’ own SaaS platform. I literally maintain the infrastructure so I’m intimately familiar with those costs. I appreciate anyone who offers software and service for free. But there’s always a cost and if you want premium service you’ll need to pay for it.

That is ofcourse another justification and easy one since paying for sync is almost nothing to me. I do hope the free Sync keeps being a good alternative for anyone who wants to try it.
