Thank you this kind of comment is why I come here.
Mostly kind chonky weirdo. Gentle nerd freak of the pacific north west. All nation states are vermin.

Yeah but presumably the parent in the M1 has a spouse operating a surveillance drone to provide real time fire child correction?
Bauxite is the obvious one. Bringing bauxite to Australia. How could you forget about bauxite?
I was just having a discussion with my family about recent union wins in the US, and when something good is a sign of how bad things must be. I suggested that there must be a german word for it, and my sister suggested maybe a chinese saying.
If you like the category of ‘things that sound like german has a word for it’, look into the 4-character chinese sayings called chengyu. One of my favourites is ‘Melon Patch, Under Plum’, meaning something that is completely innocent but should be avoided because it looks really sketchy. Don’t tie your shoes in a melon patch or fix your hat under a plum tree.
I read an article years ago, maybe like a decade ago, of some game industry person saying it was a cycle:
Incredible new graphics come out and people will buy it, then that’s not enough so they start adding more detailed and captivating story, then incredible new graphics come out and you don’t need to bother with story for a while.
I don’t know that ‘one of the main reasons’ is fair. For profit prisons are vile cruelty-factories and have pull with lawmakers, but they hold less than 10% of incarcerated individuals. It’s a reason, sure. But a main reason?
I think there are two obviously larger reasons:
There are more homeless people and homeowners see them. If you’re a local politician, you can get very far by promising voters that they won’t have to see homeless people. Here in “oregon, tolerant oregon” (to quote jello biafra) this is the most common sentiment to hear, and is reflected in policy.
Growing resource pressure leads to a rise in ‘punching down’. As climate crisis, imperial turmoil and the rich taking ever more resources fuel poverty and scarcity, the social pressure to distinguish yourself from those further down the social ladder increases. Hating the weak identifies you as strong, which grows in value as more and more insecurity plagues our society.
I generally recoil from comparing biden to putin but this really requires russian levels of post-truth politics.
Israel is committing war crimes like trump commits all his crimes - openly, in public and shielded by US elites.
Short answer: it isn’t
The power structures that make ‘the west’ a bloc in the international system are 100% defending Israel’s genocide.
We’re giving them weapons, vetoing on their behalf in the UN, denying that the text book genocide going on is a genocide. Netanyahu’s war crimes are as obvious and publicly committed as trump’s money laundering and election subversion, yet biden is pretending that the ICC warrant is unjustified.
Despite a growing number of brutally beaten protestors, it’s still true to say that the west is supporting israeli war crimes.
Of course!
I don’t get much into doctrinal differences, but I feel like this is pretty core to a lot of anarchist thought. I vaguely recall a quote from engels, something about anarchists believing you need to abolish heirarchy in order to abolish injustice, vs socialists believing vice versa. I think neuroscience shows that power differentials will always create human misery.
It’s easier to believe that the evil want power and that is also true, but the science says that power makes you evil.

Only way to make
peoplethe rich change their ways
Most people will stop doing something if you show them how it hurts others. Not so the wealthy and powerful.
Being rich actually causes neurological changes, reducing your capacity for empathy and making your brain look more like someone born with psychopathy. ‘Power Corrupts’ is a biological fact. To be powerful is to be more capable of evil.
It’s called Corditini
There’s a similar account from the 6th century CE Roman Empire: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porphyrios_(whale)
Could be a whale, or a large orca. The story goes that it was a single creature, but I think a series of Orca attacks that got attributed to a single creature fits the evidence as easily.
But Hamas won, they completely control the ‘unity’ government and Fatah have vastly less power. If divide and conquer was the goal Netanyahu would have been funneling resources to Fatah and not Hamas. But he has consistently empowered Hamas because the international community can’t accept a Hamas-led state.
That ended over 15 years ago.
US support for Israel continuing the current conflict or US support for Israel in general? If really forced into it, maybe the Democrats can withdraw their blessing for the current conflict, but I don’t see how they could end support for Israel. If Putin wins the US election who knows what could happen but short of that Israel is just too important to the US empire and they know it. I mostly believe the official line from Washington that they don’t have that much leverage against Israel - in the sense that Bibi&co have enough counter levers to make acting against them more costly than it’s worth for the Democrats.
Hence the bullshit antisemitism law, the brutalizing of campus protests, etc. Democrats are even willing to drive down turn out among their base in one of the most important elections in US history over this - I just don’t see them doing that if they had a better card to play.
I doubt it will change even if the US withdraws support, but I’m a cynical depressive type.
Our fundamentally inhuman treatment of the Palestinian people led to October 7.
There are only two ways to prevent it happening again. We could stop the unconscionable deprivations we inflict on the Palestinian people or we could speed up the genocide we’ve been engaged in.
No surprises that the government compromised of war criminals and people the Israeli courts have deemed to be terrorists are going for the later. The far right are in charge and they’re pretty open that this is the goal.
Obviously there’s a proxy war between russia and the west in ukraine, but I don’t think the US wants a long attritional war.
They could have done more to not end up in one, but I think escalation management really is driving a lot of decisions in washington.
