Not sure why climate activists would want people to suffer.
Some because they think it’ll make people more aware of the problem and create more pressure to act, others because they think suffering is a virtue, people deserve it for what they have done to earth, and similar nonsense positions.
The talks in Davos will follow a meeting in Malta in October, which was attended by around 70 countries from around the world as well as the European Union (EU) and the UN. Russia was not present. The Ukrainian peace plan foresees the immediate withdrawal of all Russian troops from all occupied territories, including Crimea.
So this isn’t some major change or Ukraine planning to negotiate with Russia, more of a “hey world, how do we get Russia to fuck off” meeting.
I’m wondering how long it takes until climate activists start advocating against it (because it would increase the use of AC and thus emissions/energy use, and decrease the amount of people suffering from the heat).
Are there any hidden interests (e.g. environmental activists trying to make traffic a nightmare to discourage cars, someone able to profiteer from the current situation somehow, NIMBYs wanting to block the project due to some other location it affects and attacking it here because it seems easier)?
So one of the complaints seems to be… that you won’t be able to see it from the road anymore, suggesting that the tunnel entrances will be out of sight of the monument. I haven’t seen arguments that it’ll disrupt the stability of the site or anything else either, so from the limited info I have, the complaints sound quite spurious.
Bullshit article/study:
These numbers are estimates based on the assumption that the Bitcoin mines run on water-dependent cooling systems typical in large data centers.
So they took the typical datacenter water consumption per MW, applied that to some estimate of Bitcoin power consumption (wouldn’t be surprised if they did the usual “use current output rates and multiply with power-per-output numbers of long obsolete hardware”, often seen in “studies” “showing” how tech X is horrible for the environment), and assumed that would be it.
All pictures of Bitcoin mines I’ve seen used (direct) free cooling which doesn’t use water. That has changed now, but simply assuming it’s the same as for normal data centers is an obviously questionable assumption.
Fun experiment: look up the CO2 intensity of electricity, look up prices for industrial electricity, look up claims of “CO2 emission per Netflix movie streamed”, then compare with the cost of your Netflix subscription and wonder whether Netflix would really be profitable if streaming was that power hungry.
(Also, the author misunderstood how this system works: “However, some data centers and crypto mines use a different system that keeps computers cool and cuts down water consumption by immersing them in a non-conductive liquid.” Now that DC has a hot liquid, which they could cool in a number of different ways, some using water some not. Which system they use to get the heat from the chip to the cooling system doesn’t matter if they aren’t freecooling)
Honestly for commercial use $20 is a steal even if it just includes the model license and compute is extra.
I think there is a huge psychological difference between “spending on public good” and “here is some money”, and especially where the latter happens, it should be very clear that the money is coming from the state/nation, not the individual leading it.
That may be obvious to you, so the message doesn’t look like a problem, but I bet at least 1% of Americans think Trump personally gave them some of his personal cash out of generosity, effectively turning it into a bribe with public money. Which is exactly why Trump insisted that his name would be placed on the check. (The letter that came with it was surprisingly reasonable and clear, which is why I estimated 1% and not 5%).
That suggests he had more balls than most of Russian leadership and was actually at least somewhat near the front.
Honestly, it’s kinda icky for a candidate to campaign for himself in conjunction with handing out public money, whether it’s done by a Republican (Trump with the relief checks) or a Democrat.

Imagine, 100 people trying to load a video from your single hard drive, it’s not fast enough for that.
YouTube 1080p is 8-10 Mbit/s according to what I could find. That’d be 100-125 MByte/s for 100 people. I think my SSD is more than fast enough for that.
Even better, a 1 Gbps connection is also (just) enough to actually upload the video to those 100 people.
And with 100+ people watching, P2P distribution should work really well too.
Hopefully in a clean container though?

Teleportation. Invisibility is a nice gimmick (until you accidentally leave it on and get hit by a car, that is).
Teleportation isn’t just incredibly convenient, depending on the distances you can travel in one hop it’d also save you a lot of time (skip your commute, instantly travel to a nice vacation destination and back), and it’d be a money maker (fastest courier in the world).
Even if it was just line of sight, being able to easily reach places that are normally hard to reach or require extensive detours would be helpful. Even just crossing a busy street without having to wait for the traffic light would be a nice thing.
If my options were nothing or the water wings/ring they used, I’m going to take my chances without those things. The wetsuit is useful (both for warmth and buoyancy), but I would expect the toys to do more harm than good.
They might be able to relay them in a way that the end to end encryption is actually handled on the phone and the relay only relays encrypted messages.
That would likely still give them a capability to MitM but it’s plausible that they couldn’t passively intercept the messages.
There is some damage to the bridge, and I think some people died. But it looks pretty minor (no significant structual damage) and repairable.
