What the old internet did was keep your interests partitioned. You could be a well respected Pokemon fan while at the same time being a beloved member of a local white supremacist group. Without the partitioning people are more likely to allow themselves to be seen as who they are as a whole. By social media enveloping multiple interests and people not wanting to maintain a separate identity for each interest, you get people who share a great recipe but are known to be a huge misogynist. Call me crazy, but I’d rather know more about the person I’m getting information from. What they do beyond a shared interest informs me as to how trustworthy they are a person and whether I want to support them and be associated with them.
Repartitioning the internet is not a solution. I keep seeing it touted as the rose-colored glasses nostalgia that it is. This example is no different. I feel it all boils down to wanting everyone to sit around their own campfires where they can sing kumbaya together while ignoring the ones who are wanting to strip others of their rights. The history of humanity is our steady stripping away these partitions, not putting them up.
They’re the single largest name in virtualization. Almost half of all companies using virtualization are using VMware. And that’s a lot of companies. Companies who have to pay licenses to use it. That’s a lot of worth.
As someone who was born in 1969, it sometimes feels like people think I grew up in a cave banging rocks together for entertainment. I think it might be that there has truly been a dramatic shift in how people learn about things. It’s like now that everyone can pull up a bazillion people recording events and watch them unfold it is harder for them to connect to the previous generations, where we all had vaguely similar experiences of information transmission. It isn’t hard for me to believe that sending a letter in the 18th century could take weeks or even months for it to arrive and a response get back to a person. I grew up seeing disclaimers that a response to a letter or order could take 6-8 weeks from a company in the US. Nowadays we get ordering stuff from overseas could take that long, but something from within the states? It’s unconscionable that it would take 2 weeks.
Did you check out Lutris for mod managers? I know Vortex is on there and is supposed to work with all steam games.
A little detective work got me to this Linux specific mod manager that targets BG3 and CP2077 - https://github.com/CHollingworth/Lampray
This is where AI is going to go - professionals are going to be tapped into it to do their jobs. AI is much, much better at spotting things than we are. Let an AI tap into a detective’s vision and it’ll spot clues he’d otherwise glance over and ignore. It will also allow for much better oversight. It can be trained to spot suspicious behaviors in employees. Not to harp on a singular profession, but cops could be held, in real time, to a higher standard.
Everywhere. This is not unique to any social media platform.
Just a conspiracy of cartographers, then?
It made sense. There were also university CS departments doing the same thing. The Cell processor in the PS3 was pretty damn powerful for the price at the time.
Are \ exploiting ? The answer is always, 100% of the time yes. If you’re not ultra rich or a corporation, than someone is exploiting you. Doesn’t matter whether you’re from the poorest nation in the world or the richest, if you’re not in that exclusive club, you’re being ground down for your constituent parts by it.
Is this corporation exploiting
That’s all you need to ask. And the answer will always be yes.
Poorer countries
This part is superfluous. Hell, they’ll exploit rich countries, too.
in order to maximize profits?
Most of the time this is yes, but not always. Sometimes they exploit people just because they can or it’s just the way they’ve always done things. Those are the really disturbing ones. Exploiting for profit we can all understand even if we find it revolting, but we have a problem understanding when it happens because no one ever said anything or “it’s just always how we did it” or some other such reason.

Tesla, the official car of the KKK!
Conservatives: Lazy welfare queens and druggies! They just don’t want to work! They chose to be this way! They should all be arrested and/or executed.
Progressives: throws money vaguely in that direction without direction Look we’re helping! We’re doing all we can.
Leftists: This is the fault of the capitalist system run by an ownership class!
Those of us who’ve been homeless or near homeless and those genuinely dedicated to helping the homeless: We need a comprehensive approach that takes all the challenges that cause homelessness into account and addresses them as a whole and in a meaningful way to create a long term sustainable solution.
Conservatives, Progressives, and Leftists to us: Shut the fuck up! What do you know about any of this? We’ll figure it out! Now shut the fuck up!
We absolutely will not be shipping containers of food to Mars.
We absolutely will be. You have no concept of the amount of energy and resources needed to feed a single human being on Earth for one meal, let alone a whole colony on another world without a breathable atmosphere and possibly toxic dirt for an indeterminate time. Farming under the best of conditions is extremely energy consuming, then there’s the need to either import hardware from Earth that is specially made for Mars or go old fashion and do a lot of it by hand. There is no where else in the solar system where you can just throw seeds at the ground in large enough quantities and feed whole cities. I do homesteading, my dad tried to be totally self sufficient foodwise when I was a teen. Guess what? Turns out that’s really, really hard to do. And that’s under the ideal conditions of Earth.
That’s where they get you.
I’ve been hearing this “we need a new renaissance” spiel since the 80s. It really sounds like “I’ve got no ideas, so I’ll distract with mentioning a time that is revered for it.” to me nowadays.
And the end of base line humanity begins.
Not by a large margin, though.
