  • Devout Christianity is a common reason. Specifically, the kind that believes abortion is murder and is the number 1 topic that can supersede all others. If one candidate vows to outlaw it and the other vows to protect it, the conservative Christian brainwashing machine gets these out-groups to vote against all of their interests to “protect babies”.

    Taxes is another I hear. People actually beleive Republicans are fiscally responsible and going to help these out-groups, many of whom are lower middle class, get ahead by reducing tax. Ignore the part where reducing everyone’s taxes increases everyone’s gains, increasing everyone’s budget, and therefore not actually increasing anyone’s purchasing power because the market will adjust sales price higher.

    Obviously, this works on the majority demographics too. But they’re closer to the in-group than who you asked about


  • That was a popular distinction maybe 20 years ago, but the line is fuzzed and functionally, the term “crossover (CUV) is dead. But, like all terms automotive, it’s just marketing.” Crossover" seemed friendlier to women to get them to drive tall cars. Now everything is classed as a [size] suv. Some classic suv examples were always unibody like the jeep Cherokee. Edit: I see now your other comment touches on offroad capability. So does a 2wd “suv” (by your definition) then get declassified? Does a body-on-frame tall wagon with viscous coupling awd get declassified?

    And no (takes a deep breath to survive an emotional down vote onslaught), there is no legal difference between 4x4, 4wd, or awd. A manufacturer can choose any term to apply to any type of 4-wheel locomotion. Every definitive trait has some counter example that still counts because people “feel” it’s good enough.



  • Wild. I was just complaining that I used to follow Lockheed Martin on social because planes are cool, but it’s recently become filled with missile and other direct weaponry posts. I’m well aware of what the purpose of a fighter plane is. They used to at least have fun posts about the scientific work performed by the U2 and SR71.


  • There’s certainly a tipping point where light becomes too yellow to accurately represent color. I was recently shopping bathroom vanities and some showed what the greens and blues would look like under different color temps, with 2700K just about ruining the appearance. I also painted a room in light blues and had to change the adjustable lights to 3500K, if I remember correctly.

    I’m just intrigued and thinking out loud. I’m having a hard time describing yellower as harsh. I could see the overhead lights doing a better job at flooding an area and minimizing shadows, whereas window light would be diffused but still somewhat of a point-source depending on distance. The “backrooms” image of the empty office space certainly comes to mind where it’s all a vague shade of yellow-green.

    As far as people who can’t seem to see anything under wandering daylight, IME, they tend to be a mix of people who are either older (reduced dark vision, reduced focus) and impatient people (who don’t understand your eyes take 5 seconds to adjust pupil size but 20 minutes to refill rhodopsin, your night vision juice). Or just people who demand conformity. Or a 4th group I suppose, who have max-brightness screens that doesn’t play with eyes well against dark backgrounds. I do personally prefer natural light and wait for my eyes to prove they can’t see enough before using lights, except for when I have physical tasks to do like cook or repair something.

    Apologies for seeming like I was telling you you’re wrong. I was trying to get your perspective but just rambled in my own opinions. Lights are a notable hobby for me, sort of. Headlights, flashlights, night lights, street lights, light pollution, night sight, neon lights, uv lights… I read up on lights weirdly often.


  • Itvs interesting that you find yellow light to be harsh. Normally, the yellower tones (2700k-3500k) are called warm and soft white. Daylight is 6500k with a notable blue tone and neutral white is somewhere around 4500K. Is your office also filled with brown/dirty surfaces that seem highlighted by the warm light or grays that clash with it? Florescent lights (and cheap LEDs) are especially harsh in general because they have really bad color rendering, meaning certain tones get muted and distort perception. Letting in daylight may just be helping restore color vibrance. Bluer lights also tend to have more UV output, which makes them more painful at night. Yellower lights lean towards the red end and aren’t so jarring for the same brightness. Bluer lights get used in hospital, lab, and other high-detail settings for more clarity, while yellower lights get used in more relaxed environments where visual detail is less important.

    I wouldn’t guess you have a different cone count, but I would guess there’s some underlying perceptions about colors and visuals.



  • I can’t explain this one, but I’d like to offer some other identifiers used. When searching for likely planets, they observe stars for wobble in their position. Large planets like jupiter and Saturn have some hefty pull on our own star. The common orbital point between them, called the barycenter, is still inside the sun, but their great distance apart pulls that barycenter closer to the edge of the sun. Our sun has a pretty notable wobble as a result. That’s the kind of thing they look for elsewhere. If there’s no other star causing the wobble in a binary system, then it must be a planet pulling it.

    By estimating the mass of the star by various observations of color, brightness, and brightness variation, they can do some “easy” algebra to calculate the size of the affecting planet. From there, they can scan for radiation frequencies in the darkness where they think a planet is sitting. Water has a frequency, hydrogen has a frequency, oxygen has a frequency, helium, etc. By stuffing objects close to home, we can extrapolate that info and apply it to further objects with some confidence. This is how organic compounds were discovered in Venus’ atmosphere.

    A lot of it is based on what we have at home, meaning we’re largely looking for what we have and then identifying it as the same. There is uncertainty about some details, but that’s how it always goes with science. It’s always being updated. It’s takes a lot of creativity to imagine what else might be out there and to devise how to look for it. Black holes are a pretty notable example. Since they’re not observable directly, what do you look for? Well, you look for other things being eaten and hope the matter is hot enough to throw a lot of radiation. 80 years ago, they were just an idea. Now we have images of a few galactic-center black holes. Some have been observed free floating through space by distorting the apparent position of stars behind it. Do we absolutely know it was a black hole? No, but that’s what solid theories can identify it as given the darkness and huge mass required to cause that kind of effect. But, as a result, estimates for dark and cold objects vary greatly because they’re the hardest to observe. There’s talk of finding more “hot jupiters” than expected, but it’s totally valid that maybe wevre just missing the cold Jupiter’s because they’re hard to see.

    I’m moved. I’m still on the 3-year±later discount cycle, but damn am I out of time for games. Work is draining during the week and the house always needs work on the weekends. The little voids of time available have stiff competition between chores, physical hobbies, and games. The hobbies and games need a relatively quick drop in/drop out phase, otherwise I’m not going to have time to get engaged. So I end up playing Fortnite/Rocket League/Fall Guys with zero hope of actually getting the season rewards I’d like or falling back on simpler games like Ace Combat or Forza Horizon to just cruise for a while. Meanwhile, the cool amazing story games I always want to pick up still get back burnered. I have more time spent replaying Portal 2 than I put into all of Fallout.

    So, really, an interesting viewpoint. A service I thought was dedicated to the Ritalin-riddled adhd flashy-light-chasing children (as I say when I shake my cane at the 11-year-old that just built a fortnite fortress in the time it took me to build 3 squares moments before deleting me) actually has the potential to solve a time-guilt dilemma for someone with too much going on.


  • I have such mixed feelings about all the time I spent with my cameras during the event. By time I realized I had no practice with the camera and eq mount for daytime use, it was cloudy the whole time at home. Totality is not something you can reasonably practice anyway. So yeah, I have a few cool totality pictures with varying detail and a couple hundred showing the partial phases… But for what? They’re not as good as many other amateurs, let alone professionals. If there was ever a time to deal with the hassle of raw photos, it was then. Part of why I gave up on most astrophotography is because the best I could possibly do is simply match it to scientific equipment. It’s cool to do it, but there’s no personalization. Instead, I look more for nightscapes or wide angle really detailed starfields. I’m still conflicted as to whether or not I experienced it properly. I got to show the pics to some people passing by after, assuming I was the go-to person for info on what they experienced, something I love about night time astronomy, but those aren’t such time-limited events.

    I’ll probably revel in memories whenever I actually flip through the pictures. But, personally, I don’t think it was worth spending so much of my time getting pictures of a black hole in a black background rather than just letting my mark 1 eyeballs observe the hole in the blue-fade skies.

    However, the one piece I absolutely would bring every single time again is binoculars. Maybe that’s why I feel like I didn’t see the eclipse. The view in my 10x binos was so incredibly detailed, the memory matches the stacked and tweaked pictures. I could see more than just the big laser-don’t flare on the bottom, I saw at least 3. Just unreal, no sight in my life before could explain it. A cartoonishly large corona with a black hole in a black background. Maybe I just couldn’t comprehend.

    The light effects near totality were certainly something to experience. Decades of experience being in sunlight just didn’t jive with what the sun was doing then. It was more akin to a distant white streetlight rather than a sun. It dimmed and crisped shadows unlike a sunset by not turning orange and blurring of the edges.

    I’m glad you had the emotional experience I was expecting to have.



  • I haven’t heard Reliqa and just took a quick listen. No screams, right? Spiritbox has screams, a couple songs are entirely screams. I get this was a question about metal but of course there’s all different opinions about frequency and style of screams. The screams are 50/50 for me but the cleans are excellent, bringing me back to Evanescence. I’ll give Reliqa a full listen though.



  • That sounds more like a normal population density representation. Everyone hears about CA or NY news because they have more significant national and global impacts, through number of affected people and volume of business. News about the state of Arkansas is less visible since it has less population than any of the major cities in the aforementioned states.

    Despite that, I’ve seen plenty of coverage specifically because, compared to the 2017 American total solar eclipse, this one is more accessible to a vastly greater population: namely DFW TX and NYC. NYC has a longer drive, but the northeast is an incredibly dense portion of the country.
