11 months agoHate to break it to you bro, but the Blizzard you knew and loved is dead and has been for a good while…and it fucking sucks 😑
I am a manager and remote work has been fine tbh, F100 and fully remote with no signs of changing. I am pretty honest with the team, idc what they do at all with their time as they are getting their work done, making their meetings and following through on their obligations.
That said, my team is rock stars so it is easy to give them a lot of slack. Lemmy seems to be under the impression that it is really easy to get rid of low performers or those simply not doing the work at all and just collecting a check. It’s really not, there is a lot of steps and landmines to avoid in order to do it fairly and responsibly…which is good in some respects. But it does hinder your team’s output quite a bit and can negatively impact the culture and morale when everyone is doing their part except one person, we have all experienced that group project.
Management is either really tough or somewhat easy and it’s pretty dependent on your staff. The best staffs don’t need much direction, give clear objectives and clear their obstacles to complete their tasks and you’re pretty much good. If you walk into a situation where the group culture is bad it can be tough for obvious reasons.
This is why you tend to see groups of people follow leaders when they change companies and leaders tend to bring in their own folks; your boss makes or breaks your job but in the same sense your employees do the same too.
I don’t think remote work changes anything but IT/Dev (my field) is built well for it and it’s pretty easy to know how folks are doing, tangible in a lot of ways.
