  • Can you imagine the alternate headline of “US sends peace keeping force to Saudi Arabia to protect African migrants”? That’s a sociopolitical minefield if there ever was one. I’m sure that if the US knew, so did most everyone else, and there weren’t any other countries lining up to help. SA isn’t known for being a clandestine government, more of a “What are you gonna do about it, buy more oil?” kind of operation. The US is damned if we do, damned if we don’t. Step in and its Team America World Police, don’t do anything and we are standing by letting genocidal governments kill nations.

  • This may be a “safety” measure in the bios of the phone itself that was triggered when you flashed the rom. Can you try to flash back to stock android and see if that works? (Tho, depending on the manufacturer, that may be a bridge already burned.) Also, it could be that android 13 dropped driver support for the phone in question and no longer “officially” supports it, so some options are grayed out unless you enable them in developer options. Probably not much help for you, but that’s the best I can think of.

If I have to pass a yearly exam to prove that I am not in some form of cognitive decline just to have the same rule apply to every other person, including politicians, then I’m all for it. Same goes for driver’s licenses. My grandmother, who is 91, just renewed last year. She told me over the phone, “This will probably be the last time I ever have to do that,” and I just thought, “I sure fucking hope so.” I’m not against older people doing what they want to do, but reality and safety have to come into play at some point. People break down as they age. I’m dealing with it now, and I will continue as I get older. I have no illusions about it. The feeling that you are entitled to whatever you want regardless of the safety of others is something that we as humans need to drop, or it’s gonna be the end of us, as evidenced by the current state of politics.

  • As someone who currently works in a restaurant in the US, I can say this this, at least as far as food service goes, is the ideal, however, it is far from the reality. We can track our tips against the daily numbers, and I see anywhere between 9-13% on average, and only in the rarest circumstance does it go over 15%. Just last night we had multiple $100 tabs with no tips at all.

I’m all for abolishing the tipping culture, but to just not tip as a form of protest against it is only hurting the service industry workers. We don’t get compensated for low tip nights by the owner. Changes have to be made in the pay scale first, and then we can remove tipping, but refusing to tip out of principal is devastating to those who rely on it. Trust me, we don’t want your tips. We need them. And I know that everyone just says, “You should just get another job that pays better.” I enjoy cooking, and I’m good at it. If your attitude is that people who can’t make ends meet just quit their job and get something better, I invite you to look at the current job market and how open it is to former line cooks looking to break into the financial sector.

Lastly, who the fuck is tipping the tow truck driver? I’ve never had a tow that didn’t feel like was a violation of my human rights. Waiting on the side of the road for 4 hours and paying triple for weekend/night/holiday/lunch hours. I’ll give them their $200 for the three mile tow and be done with it.

  • Because that isn’t what it means. “Left” or “Liberal” means exactly this:

    lib·er·al
    adjective

    1. willing to respect or accept behavior or opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas.
    2. relating to or denoting a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise.

Wanting to systematically change the status quo for the better is a matter of perspective. What is “for the better?” That is a moving target. A conservative can want the exact same thing, but the end goal is wholly different than that of a liberal. I’m not saying that you are wrong to want what you want, I’m just warning against conflating ideas, because that is a slippery slope, and you’ll find your own words turned against you very quickly.
