Anyone thinking that lemmy is a welcoming space to women should read through that thread first.
Edit: the current state of Lemmy and the fediverse reminds me heavily of early reddit, for better and for worse. You can curate some pretty supportive communities if you are careful picking them out, they remain well moderated, etc. But there are plenty of places where you’ll get scummy content if you wander or if posts attract too much attention.
They’ve actually slightly improved this lately, they ask about what they determine are risky sexual behaviors (ie hookups) with no gender attached now. The one thing is that you can’t be actively taking PrEP and donate because it would obscure the HIV testing results (that they ought to be doing every time, multiple times!).

It also normalizes the practice, the more people do it for just that shiny checkmark. Unless you are legit a public figure who could be impersonated, it’s actively detrimental to everyone else’s privacy to get verified.
I think you are touching on something important in your edit, which is that diversity of energy source is important for long term grid stability. Solar+battery storage is looking really good right now and I completely agree we need to get on that asap. But there’s no magic bullet, no one technology that negates the need for any other. Headlines inherently reduce complex issues into bite sized information, but it’s important for science literacy to remember that things are complex and nuanced! We need wind and solar and hydroelectric and energy storage and nuclear and more.
Good news! Artists have already covered this one, please enjoy The Bone Game by Drawfee
Add SmartTube for androidTV and you’re set!
I use Blockada 5 and haven’t noticed any heating issues, it might be worth a go! I did have to enable most of the lists to get good coverage (and then a couple custom selected on/off over time) but I mostly don’t think about it after a little setup. The only thing I do have to worry about is swapping which VPN is on when I want a real VPN- but fortunately the VPN I like (Mullvad) has adblock built in too.
You’re thinking of Mpox, ie monkeypox

Physics clubs always pull out the liquid nitrogen ice cream, so licking is an option!
Wow, what a fun cool way to call someone a slur without having the cajones to type it out plain.
I would say the answer is typically a-parent haha
Not very helpful but I hope a dumb joke makes you smile!
Maybe I have the low, low standards of “does it run at all and I can stand to look at it” lol, in which it performs pretty well! I definitely wasn’t planning on playing current release AAA games on the deck so anything that runs I’m pleasantly surprised.
My wife played the beta version on the deck last summer, and let me tell you, that version was baaaaad. It’s really improved with the new upscaling!
I can vouch for BG3, it runs surprisingly well (fans going to the max of course). I have graphics on medium with the upscaling AMD FSR 2.2 on and it’s perfectly fine on both the small screen and connected to the TV.
Re: OP’s thoughts, I also have a desktop but usually my spouse is on it :) The SteamDeck also travels a lot nicer of course!
I’m not speaking about AI usage for a singular operation, but instead the massive scales of commercial AI products.
Last month, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman finally admitted what researchers have been saying for years — that the artificial intelligence (AI) industry is heading for an energy crisis. It’s an unusual admission. At the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Altman warned that the next wave of generative AI systems will consume vastly more power than expected, and that energy systems will struggle to cope. “There’s no way to get there without a breakthrough,” he said.
I don’t think there’s a way to decouple current AI usage with its exploititive use under capitalism, and that usage is what I am criticizing. Right here and now, it is not serving solarpunk ideals by stealing from artists and regurgitating hands that don’t make sense and solar panels that look like waves. Maybe the broader ethics could be explored in a post-capitalism, post intellectual property landscape, but that doesn’t materially affect the world in which we live and make decisions today. And it is that circumstance that this post was made, not an idealized world.
I feel like you are misinterpreting my words here. Like I said, AI can be used well, and I’m all for ethical AI usage! Being mindful about how we use technology and what costs are implied by that use is what’s important.
Solarpunk, to me, is about the beauty of what humans can accomplish with technology not subjected to the cult of perpetual growth that is capitalism. It’s about taking only what you need and then helping meet your neighbors needs next; efficiency and growth for the purposes of a clean environment, a fulfilling existence, and a future to look forward to.
Current AI implementations are extremely resource intensive, especially compared to the value they create. This energy demand has to be met from somewhere, and our grid of renewable energy is certainly not covering the excess in the US.
In a broader comparison, how cruel to leave human artists struggling under capitalism while machines produce art, based off of the hard work of those same human artists.
AI can produce good results when trained ethically (see the Japanese bakery AI detecting cancer cells!), but the majority of AI products for consumer use today are polluting our environment for novelties at best and misinformation at worst. The technology is interesting, but the implementations now are 99% not great.
I’m all for the humane treatment of animals, but domestic sheep need to be sheared or they end up like Baarack here. Meanwhile, wool is a sustainable textile source, unlike synthetic fibers.
If we want domestic sheep to live good lives, it requires humans embracing sustainable practices quickly to address the climate crisis.
