Terrorists is just code for Arabs attacking civilians. Non-arabs attacking Arab civilians, it’s called “the U.S. military” or “IDF”.

I regret not making my assumption explicit: a democracy in which there is a just constitution that guarantees the rights of everyone equally. I would not model this democracy based on the USA, because it is such a broken system. In the USA, only one party is in power at a time, which makes problems like the dictatorship of the majority a real concern. Better are European systems where nobody ever gets an absolute majority and always has to form a coalition. It’s of course also not without its problems and I don’t profess to have all the solutions.
What I don’t like is just saying that the two state solution is ideal, but immediately saying it’s not feasible for something the Palestinians have done. This again places the Israeli needs over the Palestinians and disregard the vastly bigger crimes Israel has committed onto the Palestinian population over the years.
Yeah it does. To be honest, that didn’t even register with me, because the rest of the post just talks about the cause, not the solution. Also it agrees with my experiences when discussion this topic. Quite a few people say it’s complicated and that just ends the discussion for them.
Also any discussion about a solution must address the cause: as long as Israel occupies Palestinian land, they will face resistance.
Do you let it be a democracy
That one, if I had to choose. But I don’t, it’s the Palestinians that get to decide their own fate. I believe it’s everyone’s right to self-determination.
A lot of people only seem to imagine ethnostates as a solution. I invite those people to ask themselves some questions on why that is.
That is not what OP was saying at all. I don’t know what hypothetical person you’re quoting. OP wasn’t even talking about any solution. Just stating that the source of the problem isn’t that complicated. Sometimes a simple problem has a complicated solution.
Nobody serious is asking for all the Israelis to leave. The solution to one ethnostate is not another ethnostate. We’re asking for a new state that truly treats all its citizens equally. And to have a tribunal of sorts to convict the people who committed war crimes. This is not an easy solution, but getting justice rarely is.
The problem is that people point to the problems of the USSR and say it’s because of communism, but when the USA does similar things, it’s just them fucking up, not because they’re capitalist. It’s a double standard hinted at by OP.
The problem with the USSR was not that they were communist. I think that communism worked well for them, which magnified both their successes (beating nazis, reducing poverty, increasing literacy, getting to space, etc), but also magnified their mistakes (suppressing religion, art, etc).
Of course, every country worth it’s salt is putting out propaganda, interfering with elections, and more.
But what I don’t agree with is that every time someone exposes the dark side of the U.S. (like people voting for Trump, or democrats being caught doing something shitty again), the default is to blame an external evil instead of acknowledging your own mistakes.
You’re letting Trump get off easy by suggesting he’s being manipulated by someone else. He’s not an idiot, he knows exactly what he is doing.
But the bigger point is this: Assange did something that benefitted Putin. That doesn’t mean he is Putin’s agent. Americans are so obsessed with Russia, they see it everywhere, which is just not true.
I’m not saying Putin is a good guy, he obviously isn’t. I’m critiquing the fact that Americans can’t seem to take responsibility for their own fuckups.
For instance: Trump is horrible, and he might do evil things with Putin. But then democrats keep framing it as if he’s Putin’s puppet. As if he, an American, can’t just be evil on his own terms. Russians must be pulling the strings, causing every shitty thing.
Every US president is a war criminal.
The American obsession with Russians is a mental condition.
70 years of red scare propaganda really did a number on you guys.
I don’t know for sure, but looking back at the struggle of black people in the USA, I think the most likely way out is being forceful. Every victory was a struggle, either via direct violence or (often violent) protests. I would love to be wrong and see that love indeed conquers all, but I don’t know of any time that actually worked.
I don’t think you’re wrong per se, but I think you are applying your logic too equally. Yes, we all need to humanize each other more, but that ignores the uneven situation we find ourselves in. The colonizer or enslaver needs to stop the crime they are committing. Only then can the victims start their healing process and begin to humanize and forgive. This is a long process, but it needs to start with the crime being stopped. It’s hard to humanize the person that is enslaving or committing genocide against you while it’s still happening. It’s also hard to humanize your victims when you’re still committing crimes against them.
It’s easy from the privilege of safety to say that Israel has no choice but to keep Palestinians locked up in their open air prison, because you imagine that they might take revenge when they get out.
This is the exact argument that white people made to not free the enslaved people. The real solution is freedom for everyone, from the river to the sea.
And the court found it plausible that genocide is happening, which is what is needed for the process to continue.
The amount of Lemmy users frothing at the mouth to show those Houthis what happens when you mess with global trade is alarming.
Exactly, it’s the whole “black lives matter” vs “all lives matter” thing all over again.
None of them attacked innocent civilians in Cambodia: Kissinger bombed innocent civilians in Cambodia. And then after it became known that Pol Pot was a genocidal lunatic, the west started supporting Pol Pot AFTER it became known what he did until his death, while the communists attacked and deposed Pol Pot.
It’s always the same: the west murders indiscriminately people in the global south and then act all innocent when this radicalizes the survivors.
Edit: you also mention Vietnam. What Kissinger did there was also monstrous.
You’ve already made up in your mind that the Palestinians are genicidal, in order to justify their colonization, oppression and murder by the Israelis. You do this for your own peace of mind. You need to do that because if you didn’t, you would see it for what it is, a people fighting for its liberation. You require the Palestinians were all perfect pacifists, going along with their own ethic cleansing and genocide.
An arc so long it looks flat I guess…
