I feel like HURD is the generational starship of operating systems. Will never be completed in my lifetime but eventually my great great grand children may some day use it.

Think less about time sharing and more about using all the computers you own together.

You would have a netbook with no compute power as your UI sitting on your couch. You could connect to your beefy desktop to do all the computations for your video editor or playing a game and never have to be sitting at your desk.

You could also have a big file store device with lots of drives to store stuff.

We can do some of this now, I ssh into my desktop from my couch and have a NFS in the basement. But they all operate as separate devices that i have to really work at getting to operate together. Plan9 was designed where you’d just pick devices off of the network and the tasks operated normally. Pick your video card, local or over the network to the beefier GPU.

Oh we need a Jarrarium community too. As well as one to talk about isopods and springtails.

Yes, I know. I’m just saying Minnesota “Midwest” is not the same as the rest of the Midwest most of the rest of the Midwest is very similar.

I’m from Wisconsin, family from Michigan as well and traveled there a lot. Went to college in Iowa and dated girls in college who all were from Illinois. Now i live in Minnesota.

One thing i find odd is that Minnesotans don’t do a lot of the Midwest stuff. No midwest goodbyes, no chatting up strangers as if they were your BFF, doing all the obligation events we never want to do but say “o yah we should get together”, etc. The whole Minnesota Nice, aka being passive aggressive, isn’t really that Midwest. Of all the Midwest I’ve lived in, the highest ranking one is definitely the least Midwest in my eyes.

I’m all for personal freedoms but you’re getting a service you pay no money for and then get pissed that they are getting the money out of you another way. Sound like people being petty.

Think that issue gets resolved quickly as no one really has the power in tenure anymore. If everyone only has a few years a cycle or two of stalemates will eventually lead to both sides having to work together or try and win the entire house.

Two terms for each position seems reasonable so you can be asked to continue or asked to leave. This allows you to run on a policy, implement it and then fix it or things that need to be tweaked and then get out.

I’ll believe it when i see it. The amount of lost funds from multi millionaires and billionaires would easily pay for the staff required and yet they don’t do it. It has always felt like an intentional act ignoring the wealthy to keep money in the US. Cheat on taxes as long as you keep your business woth us.

Last time i moved i got cold called by Comcast to sign up for Internet. I asked them the price, they gave some deal. I asked what will be the price in 2 years when the contract was up. “Oh, well that really depends on what services you sign up for.” I tell them i want only Internet at this given speed and i will never sign up for anything else.

…the woman on the phone just stopped talking. I asked can she not tell me the price after all the specials run out and i get my last bill in the contract. She said “i dont know what you want me to say.”

Apparently they dont want people to know how screwed you are with Internet. I told the woman that i was going to write a letter letting them know that her inability to answer a simple question was the reason i was not going with their service. She hung up on me. Sent the letter and i got a call a few weeks later asking ifni wanted a super crazy deal they “never give to anyone.” I asked my question again and they couldn’t tell me my final bill so i hung up and reported the number as spam to my phone carrier.

Something like that. I’m all for having comradery and if you happen to be friends then that’s great. But often times, and i know I’ve fallen victim to this, we work too much and dont have social lives that exist outside of work.

Because if your social life is tied to work you’ll stick around longer during the day and potentially do more work. You’ll also opt to stay at a job that pays less or has worse benefits because it means leaving your friends.

I’m saying that the work they would be doing in two days isn’t the same as solving an actual problem. The way to really learn a language/framework/library is to actually use it in a real project. You run into pitfalls, you get compile errors and have to figure out how to debug in said tech, you find out how extentions to the tech work so you can create your own. Making a Todo Front End isn’t going to cover the vast majority of the stuff I’d expect one to know or experience when you say you “know” a language/framework/library/etc.

Oh i know, was joking mostly. At that point i had half a dozen languages under my belt and for tutoring purposes i was good to go.

To be fair, i did cover the Fortran 95 spec in a weekend, but i was motivated to tutor aerospace engineerings as there were far more females there than in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Because anyone worth their salt knows that the superficial hello world example covers the tip of the iceberg. So to say you learned it in two days means you either don’t get that you barely scratched the surface or you dont get what other developers really need when they hire someone with knowledge in a specific framework.

Honestly i thought the concept of Uber would work. I’m commuting and you are too so you give me a few bucks to go my way. It was supposed to be “Cash, grass, or ass” minus the grass and ass.

But then people started driving purely to get people to oay them and suddenly its a taxi service.

Well for scaling. If you wanted on prem you bought cheap. And when you needed more power you were screwed. So if you were worried about that you bought too much system in the hopes you don’t overload.

But even those motivations only get you surface deep. I’m glad technology has gotten better but what streamer today has bought a new camera only to find the drivers haven’t been updated and had to go into the system registry to add a new vendor id? Not that this individual task is important but it’s the mentality of being about to fix and manipulate their system when things don’t work…computers aren’t walled gardens. That’s totally lost on this generation.

But that kinda makes sense. They never had that period where tech sucked and you had to struggle through it. Even as a developer I’m noticing the junior developers amazed at the stuff i know how to do and they ask how i soaked it all up. It’s cuz i had to just to get basic shit to function.
