It was a problem with early WD green drives IIRC. The power management was exceptionally aggressive and caused massive issues when put in to any RAID-like set up. You could override it though generally.
I manage a web dev team. We try to optimise as much as possible but then there’s all sorts of tracking that gets tacked on by personalisation teams, opti teams, things like Tik Tok, Facebook, Twitter/X scripts inserted too… It’s pretty shit. And sometimes when things break it makes it super hard to debug too
First two (as others have mentioned) can be symptoms of Anhedonia
Shit 2 weeks at work and I’m OK? It’s my job to look after my people even if they have fucked up and they have
But I’m not doing great generally. I’m feeling worn down. I will literally expend my all my energy to provide support for my team, but I’m flagging.

Great breakup song if you want to just let it out

This is a cover of the Beatles song. Very different vibe to the original
Realising now my music tastes are a bit weird…
Good week overall I think. Work has been a bit crazy which I’m trying to sort out with management to slow things down a bit for the sake of my team and my own mental health. Plus being at conferences doesn’t help…
Been losing a decent amount of weight too, about 10kg in the last 3-4 weeks and starting to ‘regain’ the muscle I had when I was younger and a gym freak. I think this is more just getting my muscles used to regular exercise again so it’ll plateau soon. Just trying to get in to a health(ier) routine all in all.
Sadly missed the weekly online co-op gaming session with friends since someone messed up the days. Also bought some new furniture to make the place feel a bit more homely.
So all in all, doing pretty well.
I live right near the MCG and a decent number of people still drive in. I’m not sure why though since the city council makes a fortune by doing the rounds 2 hours in to a game and ticketing everyone without a parking permit (which is a lot of people) and the number of vehicle break-ins is pretty high too.
It’s because he’s wearing a double-breasted suit. Not really in fashion anymore.
(Useless fact for you :))
I’ve done a bunch of transcoding of things to x265 in the past (as I’m sure everyone is aware transcoding isn’t GREAT but cuts down on storage costs). With that said I’ve now moved to AV1. I don’t use GPU encoders at all as I found the quality to be pretty terrible. I just use a custom written ZSH script to go through and check the current format (it also converts audio to OPUS too)
I actually wanted to look this up. This is an interesting article - https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-evolution-of-alexey-navalnys-nationalism
“He has never apologized for his earliest xenophobic videos or his decision to attend the Russian March. At the same time, he has adopted increasingly left-leaning economic positions and has come out in support of the right to same-sex marriage. This strategy of adopting new positions—without ever explicitly denouncing old ones—is probably the reason the suspicion of ethno-nationalism continues to shadow Navalny.”
I personally don’t have really have opinion either way but was curious.
Haha I got it on sale a JB. I should make a digital backup of it actually. Can’t believe I haven’t done it yet…
I thought 000 goes through whatever network is available wherever you are as opposed to just your network provider?
Makes me think of the classic D-Gen/Late Show bit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=8GKmM1gfDmY&feature=emb_logo
Ah I’m sorry to hear that. I got down to the last 2 a few years back and they went with the internal candidate… It definitely wears you down.
Been there and done that in a similar type of role. Did you get to interview stage?
Been pretty quiet to be honest. Despite being the weekend thinking about work a bit and how I can ‘do better’. Personal life is pretty meh so it’s a nice distraction. Also doing a lot of cooking at home (pulled pork, roast chicken, some soups with smoked ham hocks etc) so have a lot in reserve which is awesome.
Yep. First aid 101. Move things out of the way and just wait (and call an ambulance).
100% My job is to stop the team from feeling all the corporate BS as much as possible. I’m an ex-dev myself so my job is to make sure they’re OK and that thy’re not getting pressure from stakeholders/PMs/POs etc.
A massive amount of tech managers have zero empathy sadly. But I’m the complete opposite. If anyone in my team isn’t doing OK they just need to tell me, whether it’s financial, personal, work-related etc.
