You are right, except for one detail. Package managers almost always validate the packages using digital signatures, to avoid man-in-the-middle attacks. You don’t need to trust the network anymore. Shell scripts piped to a shell don’t have that protection. You still have to trust the developers and maintainers, though.
Even then, you’ll be opted into sharing your information with Microsoft and their 942 business partners.
I just wish that the corporate psychopaths who caused this in their greedy pursuit of insane wealth, were held accountable. Make them pay real money for every life lost, every ecosystem destroyed, each crop failed and each natural disaster caused by global warming. And then throw them into these disaster areas to fend for themselves and survive the harsh climate without the support of instruments they bought to ensure their own survival.
I don’t understand who the US is trying to convince with their anti-genocide statements when all their actions indicate their full fledged and willing participation in it.
At this point, the US has a big role in so many post-wwii genocides that it’s almost as if they enjoy killing off large populations like a psychopathic serial killer.
Thanks! That helps.
I didn’t know that. But that’s a good question.
I hate it when I agree with an autocrat.
Muslim nations in the middle east regularly make friends with nations that indulge in human rights abuses against native Muslims. The criteria is money, not religion.
Abstaining from alcohol is one of 75 different activities and behaviors identified by the Chinese government as a sign of potential religious extremism. It is listed in brochures distributed in some parts of Xinjiang to educate the public on how to identify extreme religious activities.
What next? Breathing air?
If it’s in our “nature” how is it that the vast majority of us are not doing it?
It’s not in the nature of the majority of individuals, but it’s definitely there in the nature of our species. It’s due to the odd nature of statistics. 100% of us will never be peaceful. There will always be a minority - possibly less than 1% that has bloodlust. Unfortunately, that minority is good at playing with the emotions of the rest (this is the speciality of sociopaths) and leading the entire tribe to needless bloodshed.
This looks like a saturation attack towards the Israeli air defense. The drones and possibly the ballistic missiles are cheaper and more numerous in comparison to the interceptors needed to destroy them. The aim is to exhaust the interceptors. So, the attack cannot be seen as a failure even if they didn’t land.
Another thing to note is that some missiles/drones did manage to make it to the ground. Excluding some interception failures, the others were probably neglected by the air defense system. Israeli air defense is configured to neglect the projectiles that are expected to fall in unpopulated and unimportant areas. That again shows that the effectiveness of the attack cannot be judged from the number of drones/missiles that landed.
And finally, the attack’s effectiveness depends on the loss of lives and property caused on the Israel side. However, releasing reports and footage of such destruction would be demoralizing to the Israelis. So they’re likely to downplay the attack. Meanwhile Iran is likely to exaggerate the same to look menacing and superior. So take the reports from either side with a grain of salt. The truth is likely to be somewhere in the middle.
The world should stop unilaterally playing nice and start declaring parts of China as independent nations under occupation. Let’s see how they’ll take it.
While I agree that many FOSS devs/maintainers would find donations and other monetary support very useful, please remember that money isn’t the solution for everything. This is especially the case for mental and emotional wellbeing. Funding might increase the entitlement and demands of the users on the maintainer’s time. What the maintainer really needs might be some time off or reduction on their workloads.
I’m all for donating to these projects. But don’t let that be an excuse to treat them badly and make unreasonable demands on them.
Let me know if and when this makes insulin cheap enough to afford. If we’re going to continue making big companies richer at the expense of sick people, we might as well not gloat about these achievements.
And if you’re going to talk about the dependence of price on demand and supply, you’re still not getting it. These companies are masters at creating artificial scarcity by several means including patents and price gouging cartels.
Hmm. Reminds me of quasi dictators in India. I guess it’s a universal MO.
Murdered. It’s not like this execution has a legal standing.
It wasn’t the simple mobile tools that was sold to zippoapps. It was the privacy of its userbase. SMT would have been worth nothing without that userbase - no matter how its developer wanted to spin it.
To watch how garbage interacts with garbage, perhaps?
What’s the second problem after topo naming that’s getting fixed?
