I’ve made quite a few posts to /c/risa that are actual OC. I’m either horrible at humor, the timing is bad, or it doesn’t work for whatever reason. Extremely low effort memes? Lots of upvotes. If I do high effort stuff that takes an hour or more, I’m just discouraged by the lack of even comments.

So, to tie this all up - is it worth a latinum bar to keep trying to do OC? Do you all even want that (seriously)?

Nobody wants OC for OC’s sake. They want entertaining content. Effort is irrelevant. Frankly I looked at your post history and your risa posts aren’t that funny to me. Which makes sense if you’ve been forcing yourself to make them. Humour should come naturally.

if its a chore you shouldnt be doing it. it should be fun!

for me its a bursting outlet for my nonsense… not reeallly considering the audience when im creating stuff. i just need to get it out of my brain before it burns a hole.

ive also been surprised by some of the easiest stuff garnering the most attention.

alllllsoo… ive noticed in the verse this kinda of delayed reaction. ive gotten posts that suddenly gain attention months later as the fediverse does its thing, and the content gets refreshed out there…somewhere.

I think you’re making a valuable contribution, carry on. I wish I posted more, even low effort content makes a difference to how communities feel.

Every professional funny person, from stand up comedians, to humour columnists, to daily comic strip cartoonists, has to hone their craft. And even once they do, not every thing they produce is going to be a banger.

Figure out what is funny to you, and work at making stuff you think is funny. There’s a good chance that there’s an audience that exists that will share your sense of humour.

Make posts you think are funny, and post them so people who agree with you laugh.

No one actually gives a shit about upvotes. Its a millisecond dopamine spike. You will forget the successes in hours. Let them pass you by, alongside the dungers.

Make things cause its fun and funny to make them.

I think you are being self critical and expecting too much of yourself and a bunch of strangers. Do it for yourself. You might be happier

Have you tried crossposting to !startrekmemes@lemmy.world ?

Not to promote inter-instance drama but I believe the founder of that community specifically cited c/Risa deleting their posts as a reason for starting a competing community.

Plus, just reposting your memes at a different time of day on another instance will help get you wider views. The lemmy algorithms are fickle so a little extra self-promo doesn’t hurt.

Hey there! I just wanted to say a couple things. First to keep an eye out for Monday as a different community will be replacing StarTrekMemes. Honestly the name is really vague and it doesn’t inspire the type of community that I was looking for. After talking with a few other people and posters, we will be opening a new one. Same general vibe though. Star trek memes and shitposts. Just a different banner promoting an actual community and spirit that we can hopefully all get behind. Also way better sounding than just “Star Trek Memes hurrrrrr”. I’m not super creative.

      However.

I didn’t make the community due to having my posts deleted. In fact I don’t think anything of mine ever was. I don’t want this to stir up drama here either or anything but the community was made directly in response to a lack of rules specifically and things that directly stemmed from that.

Ah! Sorry Stamets, I didn’t mean to misrepresent you, my memory is just terrible, heh. Thanks for clarifying.
