Every time I’ve traveled, they look at the stamps and stickers that were put in my passport recently when they’re asking me where I’m returning from and what I was doing there. Can imagine getting detained if they think something is off with your story or the place you last visited.
I will admit I don’t travel much, like, at all so I’ve never really experienced this. I’ve been questioned once before but I think the guy was just making conversation. I was visiting the states so maybe less suspicious than coming back from a non-friendly nation…
