The cure for an ailing democracy is more democracy. We need more voter participation, fairer districts, and better more representative voting systems that don’t result in a two party gridlock which pushes everyone towards extremism or apathy.
The reason they are trying to draw unfair districts and make voting harder is because these are real systems of power that can influence change.
Democracy isn’t a thing that you have, it’s a thing that you do.

Yeah! I love Biden. Between the student debt changes, build back better plan, insulin price changes for Medicare patients, helping Ukraine, etc. etc. all with only a 1 seat majority in the Senate, a conservative court that trump filled, and a now conservative house.
As for your other question, a Republic is still a form of Democracy. You have the ability to vote for whoever you want.

Unfortunately for your personal beliefs, most Americans are batshit conservatives or moderate to progressive liberals, therefore usually a batshit Republican, and a moderate dem win the primaries, which frequently have more populist candidates as an option.
