Coming away was the right choice. Just pulled $1000 profit out of the club.

Motel was $160 and this trip uses about half a tank of fuel so let’s call it a $790 winner. I’ve got enough points on my RSL member card to get a big free breakfast tomorrow.

The song is coming along. It’s been a while since I’ve written something whose foundation is guitar.

What I usually do is stop working on it after an hour or so, make a copy to listen to and come back the next day. Less likely to get too caught in the details.

Craving veggies… no fancy seasoning, just loads and loads of roast broccoli, maybe carrot, and steamed corn. Want to make something with my scotch bonnet sauce so I’m thinking some kind of jerk fish. Plus herbed rice. That’ll be tomorrow.

I’d scarf down so much broccolini but that shit is so expensive :c

Just for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know: aussie.zone is “free” because we (the users) pay for it. We don’t need to serve you ads.

We won’t sell what you say or upload, either - but keep in mind that everything you say here is federated and essentially public. Someone will probably come along at some point and scrape all our data. We won’t know it has happened and the open nature of the fediverse makes it impossible to prevent. So keep all that in mind.

How much is hosting? I’d be happy to chip in and pay for a month or a percentage of the year or whatever. Sometimes I wonder about hosting charges when I upload images.

Our present costs are about $85/mo. We’re pretty much funded at this point with existing donations through to the end of the year.

Lodion does periodical updates in the Meta Community on how hosting and finances are going.

Indeed, and I did hear that many years ago. I interpreted that to mean that ads would be served. And potentially they would also spy on you to serve targeted ads. Furry nuff.

However they’re taking data from as far back as 2007 and nobody knew about AI back then. Changing the terms (often retroactively) and not allowing opt out is not cool and you won’t convince me that anybody signed up for this. The overreach is insane.

Is it though? To be blunt: these fuckers are evil. If anyone was still harbouring under the illusion otherwise needs to wake up. It’s a bit like people complaining about Optus: how many times have they gotta screw their customers before the customers go “oh, I’m getting the raw end here!”

I know all of this. I’ve been knowing this. Unfortunately these practices are reaching into every platform, just ramping up and being forced into every conceivable thing possible (not just social media) and it’s becoming inescapable. Refusal to engage is becoming less of an option.

I remember participating in citizen science programs helping to train AI to recognise cancer cells, and being excited at seeing how it was being used to generate simple legal forms for people who couldn’t afford a lawyer. Now it’s just being used to strip mine for profit, undermine workers rights/cut jobs and churn out deepfake revenge porn before regulations come in.

Went to the Coburg Farmers Market today (we haven’t been there in ages) specifically to get Temple Road Wellness Blend Chai. Miniest absolutely loves it and it’s great when you’re feeling a bit off colour. Can’t resist buying soaps, it’s one of my weaknesses, so I bought a rose geranium & grapefruit one and a lavender & peppermint one. Aside from that there wasn’t much of interest to me specifically. Elder loves the Gorgeous George probiotics stuff, and there used to always be a stall there, but we discovered that he sold the business to someone (Mumma Made) who will be at the Essendon Farmers Market tomorrow. Funny coincidence was Mr P already said that he wouldn’t mind checking that one out tomorrow, so Elder is really excited for that. He loves the chilli hommus and I love the beetroot kraut and the basil pesto 🤤😋 I can see this is going to be dangerous! I like farmers markets a little too much lol… Sometimes I think that if I had some good bread, cheeses, nice simple hommus and pesto type dips, some pickled vegetables or kimchi or sauerkraut and odd seasonal fruits and vegetables, that I could just live off endless variations of that stuff for the rest of my life.

Today was good. Lots of great food and family time. Talked to my cousin’s daughter, a 4yo middle child, about Pokemon and I think she really likes me now :D

Got my birthday presents, one of which is a book called ‘Mickey’ and it’s about a cat, so I’m stoked.

10/10 day, would do again lol

I’m looking at a watch and think yeah I’d love to buy it. But then I tell myself why? You use your phone for the time, and as far as a decorative piece goes you rarely leave the house and when you do it’s only for a few people that wouldn’t care about stuff like that. And also you already have a watch.

So I successfully talked myself out of it.

I’ve gone back to wearing a watch when out, it’s just more convenient to look at my watch than dragging my phone out of my bag.

If you end up talking yourself back into getting a watch, I would highly recommend a semi smart watch like a basic Garmin. Notifications and quick replies without getting your phone out of your pocket are a game changer. Plus all the stats, which are cool …

People are talking like it’s so cold I’m thinking like I should dress as I did when I lived in Detroit where the weather would be -10C for days and days on end. Warm hat under hood, feather knee long puffer, scarf, double layer gloves, knee high socks and snow boots. Jumper, pants and thermals.

For some reason, I feel that -10°C in Europe was a noticeably more pleasant than anything <10°C anywhere in Australia.

That was based on using very similar set of clothes, and measurement taken outdoors.

On another note, during the daily 6am drives in the recent 2 weeks, I would feel like I’m burning up while my wife is still shivering in the passenger seat while I got the heater on.

I’m feeling about 90% better now. Still have an occasional cough, but a Strepsil fixes it. I think I’m gonna go ahead with my idea for dinner and a movie tonight. The only movie that seemed appealing was the bad boys movie. I think it’s a sequel, but I’ve never seen whatever the original version is. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll figure out what’s happening. And indian for dinner. The only time I’ve had indian food from a restaurant I got food poisoning, but I do like a good curry (even if my spice tolerance is basically a Dorito) and this place is a little less dodgy, so I’m sure I’ll be right

Edit: oh, on further thoughts, I won’t get back until after the buses in my area finish up for the night. Rip. Guess it’ll have to be a taxi home. Oh well

I was wondering if there was a function for threads to be bumped back up to the top when posted in? Just so it’s easy to see active threads, there isn’t a lot of duplicates, and similar stuff is more easily consolidated into one thread. (ie. Cheap eats)

No worries if not - I don’t know how much work implementing that would be or if there’s even the option on Lemmy.

I’m not sure if it is. Activity will bump threads when the person looking is sorting by active, but I don’t think there’s a way to bump them otherwise.

That’s good, maybe not as easy to encourage other people to add to the threads but it’s good for when you want to find active threads yourself

Don’t know how it’s Saturday already… Anyways, has anybody noticed that the air quality has gone to shit the past day or so? I swear there’s smoke or something, can’t open the windows as the air hurts my throat. Seems to be happening quite a bit the past few months every couple of days. Planned burns?

Air quality is 90 at the moment. That’s not really bad for most people, but can be triggering for people with allergies or similar. For context, it was about 160 or so in melb during the 2019/20 bushfires, it’s currently 230 in new Dehli, but it’s 8 in Newcastle and 33 in Sydney

For me it really depends on what the particulate matter is comprised of. I’m very sensitive to some things as I can have issues breathing when PM2.5 is around 5 μg/m³ depending on what’s causing it
