Hello, if you are still using them, which one do you use ?
I have 300 GB of music. I am looking for one that is privacy respectful and able to read flac. Any recommandation ?
Ipod Classic, Silver, but without mods it can’t read FLAC I believe.
Sadly ipod cannot read flac. It is possible to convert to apple lossless file format
Rockbox can be installed to mitigate that. And the hard drive can be swapped for bigger flash storage, which also has the positive effect of leaving more room for extra battery.
i use an old cellphone with the radios disabled. throw a big old microsd card in and youre good to go.
I would also do that but sadly I do not have any spare phone and my phone has no sd card slot
Some of the old LG phones (the V series) were known and sold for the quality of their audio. If you can find one of those on eBay it should be pretty cheap.
I agree with this. I have one that I have kept for the audio. I loaded a 512 Gb card it it and it is perfect. Now i just need to seriously expand my music collection.
The OG Galaxy S had a dope Wolfson WM8449 DAC in it. I used the Voodoo sound app to get proper drivers on it and it became the best sounding phone I ever had. It drove my 250 ohm Beyerdynamic headphones with ease.
If you’re in the USA, best buy might have a returned low end phone, Moto’s often have SD slots.
Sadly, Android does not have a good folder player tgat does FLAC, so VLC is it.
android has a neat little “folder player” ☞ https://f-droid.org/packages/souch.smp/
I tried that some time ago, one early version renamed my files so that I had to rebuild my SD in order to sync directories.
Up to that point I liked it a lott and used it. VLC, despite the UI, has not wrecked my files.
renamed your files 🤔
how? it doesn’t even have the option to rename
I used to use Mortplayer on Android for years which played FLACs and used folders well. I don’t know the current state of the app, but it might be worth looking into.
I backed this: https://www.crowdsupply.com/cool-tech-zone/tangara
Its not yet released and is in the manufacturing process but I think it’s worth considering

Thanks ! I will check all that :)
Either dig up an old iPod (flash-modding would be a good idea, as 300+GB iPods are rarer) and put Rockbox on it for FLAC support, or dig up an old phone or something and get a decent USB-C adapter/DAC.
LG V20 and Neutron player app. Best sounding combination ever!
I have a FiiO M3 Pro.
It’s a great player, over 120DB SNR! and DSD if you think you need it.
Codec wise it supports most everything except Opus but is now discontinued (FiiO only sells players for the uber-rich now - entry level is US$499.99 for the M11S)
If you can get one used, they’re a great player.
I’ve heard good things about the HiBy Digital M300 - but i’ve never tried one.
I use a Sony NW-A55 walkman. It is one of the latest models of digital audio players that doesn’t use Android. It has a microsd slot, supports flac, bluetooth, and no internet connectivity. The japanese models are still available new on ebay, you just have to change the language on the player to english.
I love it.
I use the Kickstarter version of the Mixxtape. My wife uses the newer version, which offers some improvements.
It’s fantastically retro, but you will need to use a micro-SD.
Ok, wait, so this thing also works as an actual cassette? That’s so hilariously awesome I might get it purely for that gimmick.
Yes… in the cassette players that work with those adapters. Annoyingly, the old stereo we have set up at work in one shop doesn’t work with those casette adapters or the Mixxtape.
Also, if you use it in a tape deck, it doesn’t use the spools as inputs. You just set it playing and pop it in. Similar to my old Digisette Duo Aria.
I will admit, I have rarely used the tape deck function, but it has been useful on occasion.
Thanks, so it is probably hit and miss on that feature, but I’d also probably rarely use it. I still might pick this up as it looks very cool.
Hahaha, this is hilarious and actually pretty cheap
You should look into Rockbox. It’s an open source alternative firmware for a variety of portable media players that adds features such as support for more file formats (and it runs Doom). As for which supported players I’d recommend then maybe a flash modded iPod or an AIGO Eros Q or K (also sold as the HIFI WALKER H2, Surfans F20, or AGPTek H3).
Did not know Rockbox, definitely will check it.
AIGO Eros Q or K (also sold as the HIFI WALKER H2, Surfans F20, or AGPTek H3).
Are they all the same ?
More or less. I think there are some differences between the Q and K based models, but they’re close enough to not require separate ports of Rockbox.
