Not directly linux gaming, but still think that its kind of relevant and interesting.
Google forgot why they were there at the gate, and started making yet another messaging platform
I think most people have caught on to the fact that large corporations generally put out utter shit quality games and to stay away from them.
Amazon’s the only one I think could make a dent if they got serious about breaking into the gaming market.
Netflix can’t even make decent shows anymore, Apple would be too expensive or mobile focused, and Google can’t commit to anything.
Amazon already got serious several years ago, invested tons of money in their dev studios, bought huge licences, recruited talented people and still mostly failed to this day. I remember reading an article about Amazon’s very hierarchical corporate structure that killed any attempt at the creativity needed to make a successful game but I can’t seem to find it
I don’t believe for a second that any of these big tech companies have a chance of making a significant dent in the videogame market, it’s just too far from their own expertise
Yeah, would make sense that Amazon’s “disposable” approach to employees would fuck them over with something like this.
Apple’s managed to become a credible player in the TV space in a few short years by, essentially, hiring some competent veteran executives to run the thing and throwing buckets of money at it; I think any sufficiently motivated big tech company could do the same thing with games.
IMHO, AppleTV is the new HBO.
I want them to give Taika Watiti a billion dollars and tell him to make a Master & Commander series.
The only thing Amazon has produced is a mediocre MMO. They’ve been too busy chasing fads to try to put out anything that’s just a quality game.
Netflix can just throw money to attract game devs. They use this strategy for their mobile games and the games are actually pretty good, way better than the usual microtransaction-laden mobile games.
I’m a AAA game dev and a number of former co-workers are at Netflix nowadays. Like, a suspiciously high number.
They can’t tell me anything (of course), but I can put two and two together.
Game streaming. They’ve already discussed it publicly.
If they pay their game devs anywhere near what they pay the rest of their devs then that’s got to be the easiest career decision ever.
Serious AA titles, no. But apps? I can see that happen quite easily.
Google has proven to be outstanding in showing off limited corporate attention span and fad chasing. Not sure why the Sony boss has anything to fear from Google.
Apart from the sound bite title this article tells us zilch.
The big tech giants are the opposite of creativity and it’s why they will always fail in gaming. They’re the middle men between consumers and creators and it’s the only reason they’re successful.
Nero sang, as he transformed Rome to ash.
They don’t realize the only true Romans in the industry are indie.
Google canned their gaming product though…
Ah poor Sony.
