Hahahaha I got a pixel7a TODAY and when i was setting it up it tried to install Google Podcasts, but I noped out for Antennapod. I did momentarily wonder if I should give GP a go since I’ve only just this week started using antennapod.

Anyway I’m glad I made the right decision.

I only have an iPhone but PocketCasts replaced the pay-once with a subscription and that’s why I can’t recommend it.

I use pocketcasts but the subscription doesn’t have anything necessary so have no issues not paying

Well the sync across devices would be the main thing that people would deem worth having, just not at that price.

It’s a good replacement tbh. Pocketcasts kept crashing on me so I uninstalled it in a rage. The only thing that’s annoying me about Antennapod is that I only want one episode of the BBC news podcast but when I open it up there’s 3 there waiting for me, not a massive issue and I’m sure there’s a way around it somewhere in the settings, way better than a crashed app.

It’s very good. I wish there was a way to sync podcasts without hosting a gpodder server. There is supposed ot be a free site, but it doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Still not worth paying the insanely expensive subscription to sync on pocket casts though. I might try to selfhost gpodder soon, I just need to fix my internet so I can port forward.

Yup that’s my one issue, otherwise I’d swap in a heartbeat. You can do it through nextcloud servers but not any free one so far as I can see. Wouldn’t know where to start with a paid alternative.

Edit: Podverse, also FOSS, has a sync feature as part of their subscription. It’s $18/year. Haven’t used it to know how well it works, but much cheaper than Pocket Casts anyway (and a 3 month free trial it seems). It’s on F-Droid.
