Cable management doesn’t matter if:
- You only care if it works
- You have the accumulated memories of trillions of prior drones, including the ones who built that mess in the first place, so you already know what each cable does and where it goes.
I built the mess under my desk, that doesn’t mean I know what the cables do any more.
This dude just admitted he’s not a superior species
Try to cable manage them. The mess will look about the same but you’ll have a pretty good idea of what is what after. Lol
I’m fairly sure that I have more cables now than I started with. I’m afraid that if I cable manage them I’m going to create some kind of paradox.
A starship would more similar to a mine than a server room. What if the hydraulics pipe is broken and needs replaced, but the electric line and compressed air hose are tangled around it? Even with perfect knowledge and memory it makes the repair last longer.
You only care if it works
If you can’t maintain it it won’t work forever
I dunno, I always thought it was meant to mimic organics.
“Cable management” inside the human body is horrendous. So it felt like in the mixing of machine and biology, the machines had to become more biological in the way they worked to function properly in tandem with the Borg biology.
That’s exactly it. Cable management is a top-down design philosophy. The Borg are a collective that organically integrates biological, mechanical, electronic, and any other systems that they find useful–it’s quite literally the polar opposite of a top-down design philosophy.
It would be more surprising if the Borg had tidy cable management, because that implies some hierarchy. Actually, the Borg cubes are a little out of place in that regard. Spheres or fractal-ish structures would make more sense.
Borg were scarier before the concept of the Queen.
I kind of forgot about the Queen… Totally agree.
Capitalism is more elegant before the concept of fascism.
At least some minerals cristalyze in cubic structures, so it’s not farfetched that an spontaneous reaction results in a cube.
because that implies some hierarchy
Yup. See: Conway’s Law. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway’s_law
This indeed works in both directions and it’s possible to gain some insight into an organization based on its behavior and output.
That’s probably it, but in my head they just assimilated too many people like me.
Plus when the cables get broken / damaged, the cube just fixes itself like a biological healing, there aren’t borg drones out working on the hull
I don’t know, the drones in First contact didn’t had an issue working on the hull of the Enterprise. But Enterprise hull might be an edge case, as in “Not really Borg but soon”-technology.
On the other Hand, the Borg assimilate anything they get their cable management on (eg. the doctors mobile holographic emitter).
But I don’t really know much of the deeper Borg lore.
Plus when the cables get broken / damaged, the cube just fixes itself like a biological healing, there aren’t borg drones out working on the hull
It’s for when they run out of regeneration alcoves
Also, has anyone ever noticed that the Borg don’t have printers?
Want to destroy the Borg … just patch one 2000s era Epson Printer with a shitty software driver to one of their ships and watch all hell break loose
Calm down there Satan
No species deserves to be genocided by faulty printer drivers
I see you refrained from using a modern HP.
Obviously they treat the knowledge as the thought virus it is
All those cables are exactly where they were supposed to be!
DO NOT TOUCH THEM!
It’s not that they hadn’t found a cure for bad cable management, it’s that by the 24th century nobody would care.
Their cable management used to be fine.
The only answer is Borg enshittification.
Ah damn. They must have assimilated some publicly traded tech companies.
I can excuse forced assimilation, but I draw the line at poor cable management.
You can excuse forced assimilation?
(I want you to know that I tried to add an image of Shirley reacting, but it failed 4x, so you’ll have to use your imagination.)
Speaking of failed images, I can actually see your memes from lemm.ee now! Not sure what changed, but yay.
Well hot damn!
I haven’t changed anything either, so we must owe a thank you to someone somewhere.
To whom it may concern,
Thanks!
Anesthetics are irrelevant.
You will be assimilated. (and forced to wire things as directly as possible because that is more efficient as long as it doesn’t hinder future endeavors)
When your mind has the power of the Borg collective, you don’t need silly inefficient structures to make it easier for the human mind to handle.
Neither spaghetti cables or spaghetti code are a hindrance when there is brutal efficiency to be had.
It’s for dramatic effect
They’re such Drama Queens smh
They must have assimilated some theater techs.
That would explain the lighting.
Maybe those cables are decorative and reminiscent of the Borg’s sense of aesthetics. I mean, look at their goddamn fashion sense.
That’s true, they are drippin (in cables)
As someone who just had to set up a distiller and deal with my cables, I do not appreciate this call out. Also can you remove your spy cameras please?
No, you’re getting very good ratings on Borg TV
Well I demand part of the profit!
Aww this made me check and there is no /cablegore on Lemmy yet 😕
Create it
That’s a pretty realistic depiction of every server room I’ve ever been in.
Why do they have cables at all? The individual borglings seem to be able to talk to the borg mind without any cables.
That’s the WiFi, you STILL gotta have a cable or three somewhere.
Wireless power transmission is bretty shitty in practice. Anything transmitted wirelessly will be occupying that space in whatever scifi spectrum they’re using. So for high speed data transfer also they will have much much more spectrum. To use within each each cable.
Whenever those cables get broken in the show they have steam, water or green fire coming out of them. So these must be their liquid cooling hoses.
No matter what companies will tell you, cables is always faster and more efficient than wireless, there’s physical reasons foe that. Drones are linked to others and to cubes wirelessly because they need to do stuff and move around. Vessels are linked wirelessly with each other for obvious reasons. But there is likely an elabration center in each vessel and it’s going to be cabled to every alcove and every sensor and actuator of the ship
