Oh sure, I use singular they a lot too. And I have no problem using it for non-binary people. I just don’t like wrong information being posted online without it being disputed.

Yeah, those examples are precisely what I mean. The article you linked to explains exactly what I mean, even stating that Shakespeare wouldn’t have used “they” if he knew the gender of the person he referred to.

The referents in these cases are general, not specific people. “Not a man” - no one, not referring to a specific person. “Some more audience than a mother” - someone else than a mother, not a specific person. “Each one” - not a specific person but every person.

If you look at dictionary definitions over the centuries, you’ll find singular they mentioned, but always specifically for this general meaning.

As an added note I don’t think it makes a difference if the current use is new or not, and it shouldn’t matter in this debate. Language changes all the time, even if people resist it.

This is only true if the referent is unknown. The new thing about singular they is that it is now being used for known referents. Which is perfectly fine of course, but not centuries old.

What usually also works on Linux is selecting text with the mouse and pasting it by pressing the middle mouse button (or scroll wheel). You’d still need the mouse, but it’s at least a little quicker ☺️

Yeah, I’m gonna disagree with that. They’ve recently ramped up those checks because of increased theft due to inflation. They also scan more items now. After having been checked 4 times in a row and them completely emptying my bag each time, I no longer use the self checkout.

Yeah, I’ve not been able to find any allegations by anyone else, except for his vague mentions. There was also a Jewish person who had worked at SUSE who commented in one thread that they felt nothing less than welcomed.

Free mental healthcare is a great idea, but it will only partially solve the problem. Men tend to use mental healthcare way less than women. Where I live (where it’s basically free) there are some efforts to get men into programs, like support groups specifically for men, but these don’t change the situation much. There needs to be a cultural change as well, aside from societal improvements to better everybody’s lives.

SUSE because of Yast and the (german) company’s rumored?stance on antisemitism

I was really surprised to read about the antisemitism allegation. That’s a very serious accusation. I’ve looked into it and it seems that these claims are controversial. First thing to mention is that the accuser said himself that this was about the company SUSE, and not the distribution openSUSE.

The article claims there are emails and other employees’ statements as proof, but provides none. The article is also over a year old, so why hasn’t this led to any public statements from SUSE or any legal or other actions? Antisemitism is a serious offense in Germany.

Discussions on reddit and hacker news all state that the writer has gone off the rails. When being called out on reddit for deadnaming a trans woman, he plays dumb. I don’t think he’s dumb. It seems to me like he’s transphobic and acting like a troll about it in good old American conservative fashion.

For me, this seriously calls into question any claims he makes about social justice stuff, even if it concerns himself. He apparently views other people’s social justice as something to play with, so my gut feeling is that it would be no concern to him to lie or bend the truth about stuff like this in order to achieve something. It’s all a game to him in the political arena, not serious life issues.

If I’m wrong, all he has to do is provide the proof he claims there is, even if only anonymized.

Yeah, I looked it up the other day and apparently it only gives less results with words flagged with “-”. It’s stupid because a few years ago there was syntax to exclude a term completely, so it’s definitely possible to do. I don’t understand why they just won’t.

Well, if you need to tell people that, it’s not clear enough and thus breaks the law. I don’t know what it looks like and I can imagine you used a third party to provide it, but for user friendliness it could be a good idea to change it. I doubt you would get into legal trouble though since a lot of websites use this same format, but I always hate it when I see it.
