  • We had a beach cabin that we would go to for two or three weeks during summer. There was no electricity but we had the best time spending time there.

I remember we would go swimming in the sea under the blistering sun, white hot sand that we had to run on as fast as we could to sit on the porch where my dad had assembled “the porch table” that it was nothing more than the wooden kitchen door that doubled as furniture because that is all we had. Then he would place a big majolica bowl filled with an expertly sliced cooled watermelon…oh man I am tearing up here: The sweet flavor of the ripe cool fruit against our parched salty tongues felt like heaven. The smell of sea and fruit and salt and sand.

Beautiful memories. I miss my dad so much.

  • Lol I am right there with you. In my teenage years I dressed all black, tons of black eyeliner, etc. And scoffed at anything pastel or pink. Now? Well now I have purple hair, rainbow shoes, colorful pants and whatever ticks my fancy. When my brother cuestioned me I told him that since I wore all black for a long time (still do from time to time) I loved colorful outfits now and he was like “Well, you know you don’t have to make up for it, right?” Oh ffs just leave me alone. No one cares and it makes me happy.

  • She was selected and placed there as a mere puppet of current president amlo. México is indeed a narco governement but people who don’t actuallly experience it first hand living it every day think that this facade is true. She was married to a guy who was investigated for embezzlent but got off the hook because of political contacts. Her father was a chemist who owned a solvent factory (he has passed away and she inherited the business) with very sketchy practices regarding toxic waste management. Factory is still hers and it still operating under the same principles.

  • I have the feeling you were born and raised in the US and have never experienced life outside your own town/ city and just spew your opinion about places and situations you know absolutely nothing about. So let me enlighten your narrow anglo vision a bit:

Have you ever lived through something like what is described in the article? Have you ever experienced what a narcoestado entails? Have you ever been in a protest along searching mothers outside Palacio Nacional because ten thousand people disappeared in your country due to organized crime for this fool to keep having breakfast saying “they only want to destabilize my regime” and not even acknowledge your presence? Have you ever been blackmailed and had to pay organized crime to keep your business open for this president to say “abrazos, no balazos” ( hugs, not bullets)? Has anyone from your family been kidnapped for ransom money? If so, did you get help from governement agencies? With all of the above, how would you feel about your president saying the things in the article? I have experienced all of the above scenarios so kindly, stfu.

  • I am gladly going to share my most guarded secret regarding succulents, obligatory “I-am-not-in-the-usa” disclaimer. I live in a place near the tropics but with very cold winters.no snow though.

Neglect is your friend. I forget to water mine all the time, if I find gnats or whatever on one just spray it lightly with rubbing alcohol or pinesol, etc.

Specifically for propagating: Cut your petals/leaves clean off of the mother plant. I use my hands but you can use a pair of very clean scissors, then put them in an empty terracota pod no moisture and leave them be until they can “heal” the “wound”, sort of like scarring (spelling?) Then when you start seeing tiny little roots THEN place them on moist soil and proceed to ignore so they start doing their thing. My soil mix is 70 or 80% mineral material and the rest regular dirt. Hope this helps

  • Depends of my relationship with them.

If they are not my close friends or family, something generic like wine, nice tea, chocolate, baby plant is fine.

If they are close to me, I love giving them something I know they can use for their favorite activity or hobbie but never related to their job or school. For example I would not gift my kid something for school, that is a need and bot an actual gift.

  • I can think of three options:

My crossbow. I am not a hunter but I thought it would be super cool to learn how to use one. SO got it as an anniversary gift for me.

My horse hair embroidery sculpture things… I am not sure what to call them yet, but I like unusual art and these fit the bill.

My succulent collection . I have many different kinds and love propagating them.

Ps. I don’t know how to upload pics to lemmy. Everytime I try an error pops up.
