The reality is we could very easily have sheltered bike paths and would likely save substantial money compared to maintaining and salting roads all the time.
I couldn’t disagree more. A better place to start would be outlawing yank tanks and vehicles that immediately kill pedestrians and cyclists even at low speeds. Reducing the speed limit from 50 hm/h to 40km/h literally does nothing for cyclist safety if they are hit by an SUV, nor does it address that larger vehicles have inadequate visibility and reducing speed limits without changing road design will likely increase distracted driving.
Removing vehicle capacity without providing a viable alternative will not reduce number of vehicles committing but will increase unpredictable behavior, the best option is to provide an alternative to driving first, once that is established, you can add disincentives for driving.
In well designed urban areas, where lights are synchronized I would expect a change in speed limit without changes in traffic light logic to increase time spent waiting at lights.
This has a knock on effect in heavy traffic areas as a car in front stopping might take 10 seconds to take off when the signal changes, but each car behind them has the cumulative delay of each driver in front, so a 10 seconds delay for the first car would likely be closer to a full minute for the fifth car.
I’m not sure that this extra time spent idling would be enough to undo the reduction in emissions due to lowering speed limits (more likely for EVs I imagine), but if implemented sloppily (as has been the case every time I’ve ever seen a speed limit on a road reduced), it does add significant time to commutes during busy times and should actually be thought through properly, with other changes to optimize traffic because of it, fully considered.
A far more effective and cheaper way of reducing emissions is invest in reliable and affordable public transit options, or better yet safe cycle paths.

Not even that extreme, just an overcrowded train with someone who smells or is drunk is way worse than being in traffic. For plenty of women, someone who looks threatening can make a trip mega uncomfortable.

I went from Samsung S10+ to a pixel 5 which was a huge upgrade. Pixel 5 to pixel 7 pro was a considerably bigger downgrade. After my experience, I’m at least a few generations and a lot of reviews between my next pixel or tensor phone.

Different guy, but mine heats up with any use. Google maps is particularly bad, as is anything that uses GPS or cellular data.
Mine is borderline unusable compared to my pixel 5.

Am I using Google maps and the phone is mounted in direct sunlight? It will throttle dark mode to manage overheating .
Have I been using the phone throughout the day? It needs to be charged before I leave work.
Honestly I’d say my p7p is the worst phone I’ve had in a long time, it’s hard to go back without considering how phones were for their time, but my instinct is that the last time I had a phone this comparably bad it was a Samsung Galaxy s3.
People always down vote when I point that out as well lol. Windows mobile was already moving towards icon based UIs pre iPhone, so while the UI was a definite improvement it wasn’t the revolution it’s made out to be. The iPhone 1 had no app store or 3g so was not good for emails and, back in 2007 when flash still mattered, couldn’t access most of the Internet where windows phone could. I’m pretty sure it was successful purely based on the iPods popularity, at least until the iPhone 3gs and app store came out and it iPhone became arguably a better smartphone than those that came before.
Apple was literally founded and initially successful off Steve jobs monetizing Woz’s genius. It is not at all a stretch to claim Steve Jobs never innovated a thing.
In modern apple, of course they are far more likely to buy innovative technologies and fund development or copy competitors. Why would they spend money funding R&D when they can more cheaply buy out worthwhile concepts?

Mid 30s Aussie living the the US. Yes I can drive a manual, yes I do drive a manual and yes I think it should be mandatory for 100% of learning drivers regardless of whether they plan to daily drive an automatic or manual when licensed.
The quality of driving here is considerably worse here than what I’ve experienced in Australia or Europe and I’m convinced requiring people to drive in a machine that forces them to consider the next ~100m leads to higher quality, more mindful drivers.
Existing nuclear tech is dramatically more expensive than every competing low carbon power generation alternative and will never have any place in Australia.
Future nuclear tech (be it fission or fusion) may be a different story, but our power plants are at end of life so we need new power gen now, the world is dying so we need carbon neutral now.
We can’t sideline this for 20 years to wait and see what happens, the strategy should be the roll out renewables to the point where the grid doesn’t need any major changes. When we hit the point where the grid does need big investment, reassess available alternatives. If nothing has changed, roll out the grid changes and more renewables or if fusion drilling geotehermal or nuclear or whatever has come viable work it out then.
