I haven’t had this happen personally, but are you allowed to edit your hosts file? I’m assuming those IP addresses are coming from DNS resolution, and if you hardcode those DNS entries to resolve to 127.0.0.1, it’ll stop the ads.

nslookup <ip address> should give you the domain names, if not there’s DNS logs in Event Viewer that should tell you.

To me, multiplayer video games should be about having fun with friends. Couch co-op, LAN parties, online multiplayer work for different genres and depending where your friends are. I don’t care if they’re older games, newer games, as long as it’s fun and interesting.

So I’ve spent a few minutes trying to see what the internet thinks, and it looks like there’s not a clear consensus that the First-Sale-Doctrine applies to non-physical goods similarly to physical ones, and does seem to be a consensus that digital goods make it a lot messier. Seems like the law hasn’t caught up to technology, still.

And in absence of clear law, it makes sense that companies are making their own opinions, and unfortunate that some are being greedier than they could be.

IANAL, but… I’m guessing GOG is of the opinion that they’re selling you a license that you own, and can thus bequeath to your heirs, where Steam is of the opinion they’re selling you a nontransferable license, so a will bequeathing it to someone would be seeking to enforce something you lack permission to do.

Yeah I’d rather see an Internet community keep a mod who has shown they’re capable of introspection then they made a mistake, than try and pretend they can find a new mod who won’t make mistakes.

If the gym won’t let you cancel your membership, this is certainly a way of handling it.

To me the question is whether the result of what you’re doing makes the world around you better or worse. Would the people living in your place be better off if you were out of the equation? Then you’re a bad landlord.

If you’re making money from providing labor for the people who live in a place you own, and they’re paying your costs to do so, I think there’s a case for that being a reasonable occupation to hold. If there’s an issue with it, it’s not my highest priority, and there’s definitely some value in flexible housing stock for people.

If your goal is passive income, or you’re making money from owning housing and denying that ownership to people who need a place to live, then you’re behaving as a parasite, and I think it’s reasonable for people to give you an amount of respect proportional to that.

Of course they’ll say that to you on their platform.

If you file a deletion request, or complaint with a regulator, you should get a better response there.

It’s really a win-win either way. My guess is it’ll be a really pretty game worth playing, which might or might not become the definitive AoM to play long-term. If it’s not, I’ll pick up the original those couple times a year I need my fix

As an American who has experienced Deutsche Bahn, National Rail, and Amtrak, I’ll stand by Germany and the UK having pretty good inter-city rail compared to us. Lübeck and Bath are the cities there I’ve been with the worst public transit, and they would be well above average in the US.

I haven’t been to Switzerland yet, but it’s not shocking to hear the public transit there is all-around better.

Even in countries with pretty good public transit like the UK and Germany, a large majority of families have a private vehicle. If we had better trains and subways in the US, I don’t think too many people would sell their cars, but only use them once or twice a week, rather than once or twice a day.

That’s a huge win in my book.

The EU had a documented process for a member state to leave. It was untested and messy, but it existed.

There’s no legal basis for a state to leave the US. Now it’s possible we let it happen despite this, with or without armed conflict, but it’s hard to imagine a hypothetical Texit not being messier than Brexit ever was

When a contract ending almost caused Sony to remove all Discovery content from users last year, including digital copies of things people had paid full price for, the cracks between buying a digital license and actually owning something that can’t be taken away became more visible to a chunk of people. It’s something, but it’s not ownership, and it can be taken away based on agreements you may have no way of gaining insight into.

Dredge is really hard to do well though, in that it makes a card playable no matter what else is written on it, and making a card too playable, then adding dredge onto it can easily make it broken enough to pick up bans in eternal formats. It’s such a small design space, but I’d also love to see a few cards try to thread that needle.

Buyback is fun, Clockspinning in particular stands out as a fun card to play, even if it’s not amazing. Expanding it to creatures would be a fun twist to see it come back with.

He’s taking a break for a while, and won’t do something as regimented as weekly researched videos again. He’s still doing Lateral, his podcast, and a few smaller projects like the newsletter.

I’m hoping after he takes his break, he’s able to find a healthy balance where he can create several videos a year when he really wants to, and finds it creatively fulfilling. It really seems like he loves exploring the topics he tends to cover, so it seems unlikely he won’t return at some point. How long the break will be seems to be the biggest unknown.

“Melting down confederate statues and turning their remains into statues of the cast of hit Adult Swim animated series Aqua Teen Hunger Force” sounds like a great political platform. I’d vote for them.

I don’t think it suggests they believe he will return, but that it’s a serious enough possibility they should do something to prevent a seriously bad outcome. With a 25% chance of a Trump win, this kind of prevention is worth doing… and it’s unfortunately probably above that.
