I need a new pillow but I am confounded by the sheer choice. How does one go about actually choosing the right pillow in this year of our Lord 2024?

A question for dumpling affectionados; what’s your favourite dipping sauce? I’ve got a bunch of dumplings and similar foods for a lunch tomorrow and need to make up some dipping sauces to serve with them.

Equal parts soy and rice wine vinegar and a bit of sesame oil on top.

Also some fresh chilli and spring onion or chives put them in it’s great.

Bought I love the poonsin viet spring roll sauce. Or hot XO. Otherwise a similar one is sugar syrup, reduced orange juice& chilli. Or soy with sesame oil. Plum is pretty good. As is a really hot chilli paste cut with good old dead horse and a dash of lime.

Can’t go wrong with chilli, soy and mirin. Add chopped spring onions or sesame seeds if liked. Also, plain mayo is pretty good too - okonomiyaki vibes. Since I was gifted with the bottle of pomegranate molasses, I’ve been using that in dipping sauces instead of mirin and it sure packs a punch. Might have to find another bottle when this one runs out. Aldi sells a balsamic vinegar-based fig glaze that makes a nice dipping drizzling sauce too.

I’ve been thinking about something a lot lately:

When I see a Reddit post that has high engagement, 8/10 times it’s a topic that’s creating division in the comment section.

The more engagement, the more ad revenue for the site. Societal discourse is changed by the need for ad revenue. Advertising dollars shape society a lot more than I realised.

    /Half asleep rant

Yet, it doesn’t need to. These daily threads are easily the most active on aussie.zone, often among even the most active threads on all of Lemmy. And clearly they are not a place of division.

Engagement doesn’t need to be about conflict and division. Nor does it have to be monetised.

If it bleeds, it leads - the mantra of commercial television and quite a lot of the interwebs. And we’ve all been thoroughly brainwashed into accepting this as normal. One of the many reasons I don’t have a television and won’t be getting one.

With so many dipping sauce ideas it was hard to make a choice, so I ended up making 4. I have a vinegar & ginger, vinegar soy & chlli, spring onion oil, and a gyoza sauce recipe that included pretty much everything - vinegar, soy, chili, garlic, ginger, spring onion, sesame seeds and sesame oil.

I also decided to make some satay sticks, so I also have a peanut sauce to go with them. The sauce worked out really well, I may be tempted to dip all the dumplings in that too!

It all took a bit longer than expected, but It’s all done now - including a birthday cake for desert (plain vanilla) and I made a small extra cake so I’m enjoying a slice of that before bed.

I just did a whirlwind tour of all the nearby Asian shops. So many mysterious ingredients, including a bewildering array of dried fish products. I had no idea before today that fish powder exists.

It is fabulous to have them. My parents spent some time in Singapore and came back determined to recreate a version of satays, but there were very few ingredients available here back in the '80s. We had to make coconut milk by soaking dessicated coconut in boiling water and squeezing it. The only way we could get unsalted peanuts was to buy them still in the shell, so we had to start the sauce by sitting around shelling peanuts! It’s all much simpler now.
