I believe within the GOP these types were once labeled as traitors and were blacklisted. That’s when things were great no?

That was out of convenience when they could label someone a commie. Republicans have never cared for democracy.

Why can’t Democrats just go full on Red Scare McCarthy on them?

Call them Un-American traitors who would rather go to Moscow than to Washington.

        Worked in the 50s, right?

Edit: let’s go even farther. Set up House Select Committees on Un-American Activities and have them testify that they have not worked with or received funds from the Russians.

If Democrats knew anything about politics they’d be dominating the Federal Government every year, just like they did for 40 years last century.

The red scare should never have ended in the first place since the cold war certainly didn’t end for China and Russia.

To be clear, the “Red Scare” was just a cudgel wielded by Joe McCarthy (no relation to Kevin “uWu please notice me, GOP sempai” McCarthy) against people he considered to be his political opponents. It wasn’t really about finding actual Soviet/Communist covert elements and influences, and it never was. Just like all the idiotic privacy-undermining laws politicians are throwing around these days are to “protect the children”.

          Funny you mentioned that.

I’m sad to have recently discovered that a tech journalist from my youth (who I already knew had rightward leanings) has unironically called for the opposite version of this.

If there’s a surge of neo-McCarthyism I think unfortunately this is probably more how how it will look, IMO.

This systemic anti-Americanism is as un-American as can be. It’s time to consider bringing back HUAC. First of all, most of the documented abuses of HUAC were studied and are preventable. And even the abuses, which included the Hollywood blacklist, were over-rated, by today’s standards. I recall all the protests over HUAC that played on the nightly news. It was always nihilistic beatniks who did much of the protesting.

Why can’t Democrats just go full on Red Scare McCarthy on them?

Because they are too incompetent. They infight when they control both houses and when they lose the other house, they no longer can even get their own supreme justice candidates get elected.
